BAREILLY: An Army jawan was allegedly shot dead by a person in full public view in a market in the Cantonment area here after the former opposed the sexual harassment of a fellow Army man’s wife.

Lance Naik Anil Kumar was shot at about 1pm at BI Bazaar by Dhruv Chaudhary. Both are residents of Kori Mohalla in Sadar Bazaar of the Cantonment’s civil area. Anil was rushed to the military hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

According to police officers, Dhruv’s brother Rajesh had passed lewd remarks on a woman, who is the wife of an Army subedar who Anil knew well. Cantonment police station in-charge inspector Vijay Pal told TOI, “The subedar was transferred to Arunachal Pradesh recently while his family lives here in rental accommodations. A week ago, his wife was buying groceries when Rajesh passed lewd comments on her. She informed her husband over the phone about this.”

Pal added: “The subedar told Anil about the incident. Two days ago Anil reached Rajesh’s house but he was not there. Today, around 1 pm, Anil went to Rajesh’s house again and warned him not to harass the woman. Rajesh informed his brother on the phone. Anil was halfway back home when Dhruv spotted him in the market. Dhruv confronted the Army man, abused him and shot him twice,” Pal added.

Superintendent of police RS Sajwan said: “After the murder, Dhruv arrived at Kotwali police station to surrender. We have recovered a country made pistol from him.” Police lodged an FIR against Dhruv under sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempted murder) of IPC on the complaint filed by Subedar Rajesh Kumar of Jat Regiment Centre.

Anil was a native of Khatima in Uttarakhand. He is survived by two children studying in class III and VI, and his wife, who live in Khatima. After the murder, all shops in the market downed shutters.
