Swedish car maker Volvo says its vehicles built in China might actually be superior in quality to those it makes in Europe.

In an interview with Australia’s Go Auto, Volvo's senior vice-president of design, Robin Page, admitted that some were concerned about the automaker’s decision to build many of its vehicles in China.

“What we’re finding is that the quality of the cars is actually better in China than in Europe. Everyone was worried about quality, but as soon as they [the Chinese – Ed.] started the quality was even higher than in Europe,” Page said.

He attributed the difference to the greater automation in manufacturing at European factories. Chinese factories produce such high-quality vehicles because they rely less on automation and have tighter tolerances, the official explained.

“To be honest with you, if you talk to the (European) manufacturing guys, they’ve put so much automation into the system, you haven’t got that manual adjust. They’ve [Chinese factories –Ed.] got more people on it, less automation, which actually gives you that ability to get tighter on the tolerances … and make finer adjustments.

Volvo started exporting Chinese-built vehicles around the world four years ago. First, it began sending the long-wheelbase version of the previous-generation S60 to the United States. The company has also shifted production of its S90 sedan from Sweden to China at the end of 2016.

Compare 2 products of the same cost - the Chinese one will have higher quality.
Or is that obvious?

Lesson from Samsung's burning phones: they are all from the batch using South Korean made batteries, none are from the batch using Chinese made batteries. Samsung paid only 2x as much for the South Korean batteries as they did with the earlier batch of Chinese batteries. You need to pay more than 2x to achieve the same quality.

Not true, the Chinese batteries were exploding too. The problem was not in the battery itself but from the specified dimensions. They did not allow for adequate expansion so the batteries from both Korean and Chinese manufacturs were exploding. On that note, I miss my Note 7 ;(

It's not the brand, it's the producer/owner. Volvo is Chinese owned and produced now, thus, change. If it stays American owned, there would have been no changes.
不是品牌的问题,要看是谁拥有/谁生产。沃尔沃现在就是中国人拥有中国人生产,这就是求变。如果沃尔沃始终是美国人当老板,就不会有什么改变。

My point is that I wish Ford would have retained ownership of Volvo. They have a great reputation and nice looking vehicles. I would have sourced Volvo designers for Lincoln vehicles. I would have even tried to bring the Volvo brand into Lincoln dealerships. I am sure the Volvo dealer network was an issue.

The owner was the issue. Unlike the Chinese, Ford didn't invest enough into Volvo, let it slip and languish. Quality declined, design aged, and dealership network suffered. The Chinese gave it the attention and investment it deserved, linked it to efficient and effective production plants, so the Volvo brand made a comeback.
谁当老板还是很关键的。不像中国人,福特对沃尔沃投资严重不足,才造成它走下坡路、失去活力。质量下滑、设计老旧,受苦的则是经销商网络。中国人则为沃尔沃投入了足够的专注和相称的投资,为它制定可行而高效的生产计划,所以沃尔沃这个牌子才能起死回生。

[Citation needed.] Russia's car production is quite large, but it's never going to be one of its main strengths (read up on comparative advantage). Also look at Norway's and Australia's exports. Lastly, Russia's living standards are higher than China's: considerably higher PPP GDP per capita and HDI.

Chinese can do both, cheap and sloppy and excellent quality for rather very high prices. There is pretty much nothing in China you can't have from cheap to prices that are almost unbelievable. The cheap stuff goes into export.

There's a limit to how much you can get from automation. Machines can't exercise judgement, they can't generalize, they don't understand context, they can't solve problems they haven't been taught or programmed to solve. You need the human element as the Chinese seem to understand, and are producing higher-quality output.

Back when Volvo was owned by Sweden it was dying. Geely didn’t make it clearly top tier brand but at least somewhat comparable. Assuming a no US propaganda scenario, it seems that Chinese car design is somewhere in between French/American and German.

It's a stretch to call it Chinese car design. Their R&D and design is located in Sweden, and I doubt that place is full of Chinese.
Brands like BYD are fully Chinese and not doing too bad either.

The top command is in China, regional R&D places exist everywhere around Europe and Asia, possibly US as well.
Brands like BYD would have some offshore plants as well, that doesn’t mean they aren’t fully Chinese.

According this article, Volvo started to manufacture cars in China beginning in 2016. I'm not sure if this comment from the executive is just self-promotion on the behalf of Volvo to assure international buyers, who would likely be suspect about the quality of Chinese made vehicles, not to worry about the quality of Chinese-made vehicles?
Either way, now that Geely owns Volvo, each vehicle is "Chinese" no matter where it is made. Along with their promise that all vehicles that will launch from 2019 onwards will be hybrid or fully electric, my next car will undoubtedly be a Geely Volvo. Volvo has distribution channels in Hong Kong already, and they've been there for decades (my Dad's first car was a Volvo) so HKers can buy them right away.

pretty much everyone i talked to, the new Volvo cars (which none of them knows are actually Made in China) are nice, so much better than their previous lineups.
