Economy is measured by GDP which can be understood as any of the three things below

The total income generated by the citizens of the country. It includes profits generated by businesses.
The total value of goods and services consumed by the citizens of the country.
The value addition done by the citizens of the country.

The first and third aspect shows how productive the citizens of the country are.

The second aspect shows the standard of living of the country.

The GDP per capita is a true measure of the earning capacity or the standard of living of a country. However if you consider GDP alone then China and India deserve to be the first and second contenders for the top position. However USA takes the top spot because USA has huge amount of capital invested in businesses that generate income for its citizen while the population of the country isn't very high compared to China and India.

人均GDP衡量一国国民的赚钱能力，以及一个国家人民的生活水平。

如果单单考量GDP，中国和印度应该是争夺第一的前两名竞争者。然而，现在第一的是美国，因为美国企业投入大量资金，创造了大量财富，虽然美国人口跟中印比起来并不高。

BTW the population of India is going to overtake the population of china in another 10 years. India will overtake USA in GDP because of the huge population but won't be able to beat China as it's population is better educated and more skilled.

顺便说下，未来10年，印度人口将超过中国人口。
