Introduction
前言
I don’t know if any of my Indian friends who visit my blogs have been to Kailash Mansarover or not. I must ask Usha Suryamani because she is always out visiting temples. I marvel her faith that I believe gives her strength to make pilgrimages to even little known temples at far off places. In India the devotees undertake arduous journeys to temples situated on high hills. One is often amazed to see little children and even the old and infirm, marching on, with prayers on their lips. The conditions euphemistically speaking are not good. Poor infrastructure, lack of toilets on way, insufficient rain shelters, inadequate health and safety support from the administration- everything seems lacking except enthusiasm of the people and the vagaries of weather but still millions of people make pilgrimages to Amarnath Caves in Jammu and Kashmir, Vaishno Devi (also in J & K), Kedarnath and Badrinath in (Uttranchal) and many other places deep in the Himalayas.
Some people go to Mansarover in China. They have to undergo fitness test because it is said that physically weak people cannot undertake that tough journey. I don’t know, how one feels on being there but the memories of seeing the majesty of ‘Nar’ (Man) and Narayan (God mountains at Badrinath, covered with snow are still fresh in my memory though I went there more than twenty years ago. They are two towering mountains facing each other as you see them while standing in the valley where Badrinath Temple is located. The sheer size was Narayan dwarfs Nar mountain range and their names thus aptly symbolize the stature of man in comparison with the majesty of God
Today, while writing introduction for the second part of the blog by Andrew a thought came to my mind that what the pilgrims think on reaching Mansarover? Perhaps the heaven lies beyond the foreboding hills and on seeing the snow-capped mountains surrounding Mansarover what do the apostate think? That what hidden beauty lies on the other side of the yonder mountains? Well, no one knows it for sure where heaven is or whether it is there or not- but many of us will contend that it is here itself ; all that you need to have is an eye to discern it.
Let me bring to you some lines from a beautiful Hindi song that has suddenly come to my mind.
Yeh kaun chitrakar hai (Who is the artist?)
Second Stanza
第二节
Tapaswiyon see hain atal yeh parawato kee chotiyan
These mountain peaks are like unshakeable (faith, grit of the) meditating hermits
Yeh sarpa see ghoomeradar, gheradar ghatiya
These serpentine, curvilinear valleys
Dhwaja se yeh khade huye hain wariksh dewadar ke
These deodar trees are standing like flags

Yeh kis kavee kee kalpana kaa chamatkar hai
This is the marvel of imagination of which poet?
Yeh kaun chitrakar hai..........
Who is this artist…
Now I take the liberty of presuming that you have liked this stanza and therefore I am going to put the other two stanzas too here because poetry enthuses me, it’s my first love.
Let’s enjoy the song first
The First Stanza
第一节
Haree haree wasundhara pe nila nila yeh gagan
On this sprawling green carpeted earth is blue sky
Ke jis pe badalon kee palakee uda raha pawan
On which the air is swaying the palanquin of the clouds
Dishayein dekho rangbharee, chamak rahee umang bharee
See it’s colourful all around. All directions are glittering with excitement
Yeh kis ne phul phul pe kiya singar hai
Who has decorated every flower?
Yeh kaun chitrakar hai
Who is the artist?
Third Stanza
第三节
Kudrat kee iss pavitrata ko tum nihar lo
Behold the purity of the Nature
Iss ke guno ko apne mann me tum utar lo
Assimilate her qualities in your heart
Chamakalo aaj lalima, apne lalat kee
Let your forehead (shine with its glory)
Kan kan se jhankatee tumhe chhabee virat kee
From every particle the image of Almighty peeps out
Apnee toh aankh yek hai uss kee hajar hai
We have just one set of eyes but He has a thousand
Yeh kaun chitrakar hai.........
Who is this artist?
Although the song is very meaningful but my translation is poor, I know I haven’t been able to do justice to the words but I think I have conveyed the essence.
We all know, who He is and the more we see His art, the more we learn to see His art in everything around us, the more blessed we feel.
If you happen to go to Kailash ManSarover and a thought comes to you that “What lies beyond?” then- this blogs brings an answer to your question- “What lies on the other side of Kailash Man Sarover?” (For the benefit of my Chinese friends, let me put here that Kailash Mansarover is a Holy Pilgrimage site revered by the Hindus.
In the heart of Shangri-La
Andrew writes:-
My original plan was of skipping Lijiang and finding some company for coming along with me to visit Meri Snow Mountain(major peak Kawagebo ). The main purpose was of course to save on expenses by sharing a cab, for the reason that public transport never allows hopping off for taking instant photos when captivated by random awesome landscapes. Besides, having dinner in solitude is a torture in itself.
On such an excursion the best thing would be to trek all the way, camping at night but in today's commercial world, it's even impossible to dream such long excursions.
Now hundreds of such places are visited each year by multitude of humanity and they leave the marks of modernization in the form of garbage that Mother Nature doesn't know how to get rid of.
My expectation fell through after two nights in Lijiang where I learned from the local people that it was perhaps the leanest off-season that they had seen in years and they couldn’t recollect when they had seen so few tourists to follow Joseph Rock’s trail in the heart of Shangri-La before this.
A sleepy little town and the foothills
But nearly 300 RMB of entrance fee to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and a luxurious cable-car ride provided me with enormous tranquility and gratification for the venture ahead.
Last two times when I was in Lijiang, I had not seen even a glimpse of this mountain which is sacred to the local Naxi people.
The peak-season is during summer vacation but it also is perhaps the worst time to visit this mountain because most of it remains shrouded in thick mist and the peaks remain hidden from the view by the thick clouds above.
Now, soothed by the wintry sunshine like smile of the mother, I gasped and reached the highest point till where setting the feet is allowed, from the upper station of the cable car which passes above the main glacier
Reaching the highest point under the summit....The famous point for self certification-
So high that you can almost touch the sky..........
you can hear the stars whisper
and you can see your thoughts fly
At the landmark of 4680 meter above sea level, some mild altitude sickness did not bother me much. However the sheer beauty of the place stole my heart and my tiredness and the overpowering fears evaporated as if defying science or perhaps the heat of my excitement was intense. The thoughts propelled by gigantic stream of pleasure which the site of a frozen glacial stream had set in motion were like merry laughter of a child that knows no restraints.

Hello Namita,
I feel inflated. Your comment is far better than my post but surely I am going to bring more of the beauty none of us has seen so far.

I too want to go and I am often inspired by your writeup about your pilgrimages, but I am not that religious. I will need stronger mental resolution for taking up such journeys but I have a sincere desire, that if ever I could establish a tourism service between India and China, I will ask my Sulekha friends to join me in my maiden adventure. Should we choose such challenging journeys or settle down for more attractive Shanghai- Beijing tours, will depend on how my Sulekha friends respond to my offer if it ever materialized.

Shangri-La comes from local tibetan accent, which means sun and moon in one's heart. It is very easy topoliticize everything you see. What matters most is citizens' well-being and life of decency. Obscurantism is ideal for explorers who seek for some primitive society. If past is darkness, once enlightend, no matter how a society changes, you will always find your own sun and moon.

Hello Ocean,
I admire you for your views which are contrary to the conventional. I am not aware of what the foreigners say about such places as Shangrila but bringing commercialization to a place has its good and bad points. It's not possible to say whether improvement in financial status brings happiness to a person or not but it surely makes his life easier in many ways. I have come back to China and I am once again at the same place Gaogang. I will be happy to meet you some day if I could. Where are you these days and what is your phone number?

Navneet Ji:
what a good new to know you back to China and what a bad new to know I am not in China right now, I am in other country, and I think I will not return to TaiZhou anymore because my contract has done. and the factory is in very bad situation so I have no reason to stay there. but if you have time, welcome to visit my hometown. it is a bad place, but still not seriously bad to tourist.
improvement in financial status maybe not brings happiness, but personally, I think it is better to let it happen, then vertify it is true or not. if someone's financial status is not improved, he live in unhappiness, see what is happen in Bhutan. Bhutan once the world "mostly happiness country", and most of Bhutans said they live in happiness. however, recently some reasearch show the Bhutan's happiness index has obviously fall, because what? because now they have TV. now they know outside world. and that shit Shangri-La, to me, just another example same like Bhutan.
Navneet

Navneet Ji:
Ah, the Shangri-La, the vocabulary which I hate mostly in this world. sometimes I told myself that if I am the god, the first thing I do is to ban this word for all life who lives in this planet.
I hate this word not because this place is awful, no,no,no. LiJiang and this region, is beautiful, even more beautiful than anybody's imaging. I hate this word because I think this word is created by west, and itrepresents such idea - a man has right tostereotying other man, and force other man to do whatever takes to comply hisillusion. no, nobody has such right. that how those westner come and feel deeply disappointment about Lijiang because in their illusion, they think they will see some monks who extremly poor but do not care any shit of outside, so harmony and so on, then they will fell they are saved, escape from indurstrial world or upleft to heaven or something. but reality is a communicial world full of poor vendor who wants to sell little plastic shining stuff for some foreign exchange. so they disappoint for that and said Chinese governmetn break the culture of this place, too much commence so and so. but what about those poor villagers and vendors, ban them from better life, make them ignorant from outside, just because westner need one such place for their kindergarden style illusion? that is what Shangri-La represents, and I must say I will cheer and hat-off to anyone who destroy this word.
however, it is a very good article, thanks for you uncle Navneet
Navneet
Navneet
Yes, it is patriotic way of think but I think seeing the world as a whole is holistic.
Navneet
Navneet
At least we Indians are driven by faith. I don't know what drives the Chinese and other apostates to such high places- perhaps the spirit of adventure which is very basic to man. Whatever be the motivation, I believe its a gift from God.

As usual wonderful pictures and your thoughts.Yes it is the faith which takes you to any difficult place of worship. Though I am not a good climber because of age and weight I could walk on uneven 400 steps to Gurushikar in Mount Abu (Dec.2014).Your pictures of Lijiang were awesome. The small town appears to be very clean
Navneet
Hello Vijay,
Thanks for a wonderful comment. I would say that my thoughts came gushing forth like a stream on seeing the pictures so the credit for it all must go to Andrew although my thoughts become poems when they come in torrents.

What an inspiring comment Bala Sir- In fact ever since I have seen the beauty and development in China, I have been toying with an idea of providing a tourism service for my country people. I have come back to China to fulfill those plans, as I wasn't making much headway sitting in India and when finally I do that inviting my Sulekha friends for the initial trips is top on my list.
Navneet

Excellent Travelogue , Navneet. You have one more certain visitor to this Heaven in Earth! Beautiful photographs too.

Thanks Andrew,
The blog is yours. It started with your adventure and you wrote the narrative very well. I have just beautified it. I am happy to note that you feel inspired. Now you write about the other pictures, about the trek and the scenery and I will make Part 3 of the blog. I picked up Shangri La from your narrative because Indians are familiar with this word. Nobody would have understood if I had written that the mountains are in Dequin County.
Navneet
Andrew,

Beautiful Navneet, I could feel the chill and thill in my bones! Beautiful pictures and write up. The verses were a treat.

Thanks Edwin. All these places look marvelous in pictures but are bone chilling, frigid. You got to be gutsy to go to such places and admire. Visiting vicariously and writing about these places is a better option.

I'm exceedingly excited to read this part. You have indeed elevated my orginial work to a much higher level. I know Mt Kailash and two adjacent lakes. We even have a brand called Kailash selling outdoor goods, a main supporter for Chinese climbers. I have been to Tibet once, having an unforgettable night at EBC and an amazing driving experience along the epic Tibet-Nepal highway, and of course a fantasic ride of the 2-nights Wuhan-Lhasa train. I am very eager to share with you some other time.

Dear NAVNEET
What a blog, such breathtakingly awesome pics.
The beauty of the place was so aptly conveyed by Andrew-
So high that you can almost touch the sky..........
you can hear the stars whisper
and you can see your thoughts fly
These thoughts conveyed it all!!!!!
I just loved your description too of the beauty of the place-We all know, who He is and the more we see His art, the more we learn to see His art in everything around us, the more blessed we feel.
So true,HE is everywhere and the beauty of HIS creation is all around us in small little things. Just experiencing it makes us feel we have experienced HIM!!
Yes after seeing the beauty of the place I had to agree with what you said-Well, no one knows it for sure where heaven is or whether it is there or not- but many of us will contend that it is here itself ; all that you need to have is an eye to discern it.
Thanks for a lovely blog which truly brought heaven to us!!.
Wish I could go to these places. Navneet maybe in your China trip you are organising for us!!!!

Andrew

I love the mountains, hence your blog! Thanks to Andrew for the amazing pics!
There is a certain sense of humbleness and tranquility that comes from conquering (?) mountains! I have been on a few hikes around the globe.. & I have loved it for various reasons..Some being nature, the social'ness, the endurance etc.. the I also also taken to hiking Tirupathi and Vaishno Devi, more for the being with family or friends and I have realised that the religious fevour of a group is indeed infectious! There is a certain vibration you get by praying in a group (I have felt it at aarthi at haridwar, the sabarimalai bhajans in chennai, at vaishno devi when despite waiting in the iced corridor with our legs frozen, we still endured!) Kailaash Manasarovar is on my list too.. someday soon may be..

Hello Divya,
For a person who loves mountains, its altogether a different feeling when he/she goes their. It's a kind of pilgrimage even when he/she is not visiting a shrine. The very motive behind making the temples high on the hills by our ancestors was perhaps to seek oneness with Him and that is exactly what the devotees find when they reach the temples and pay obeisance.

Navneet, great pictures . Last year my SIL and her husband went to Kailash -Mansarovar. It was sheer devotion that moved them, They went from the Nepal side . I don't think I will be able to make the trip because religious devotion is not my cup of te I love nature but will not move myself to make such trips.a. s

Well Balaji, I really marvel the devotion of the people who are driven by faith, like they might be wondering at my lack of it but people crawling to temples is amazing display of faith. There is little difference between them and those beheading people in the name of religion except that their goals are different.
