Anshul Agarwal, lives in India
Look at the boy on the left-
He is Abhimanyu Sadasivan.
Abhimanyu was a 16-year old student in 11th grade and was found dead on the terrace of his family’s apartment in March, 2014. He committed suicide in the midst of his exams and left a suicide note in his chemistry exam sheet. On it, was written,
"The CBSE system is based on mugging. Education should be about understanding and applying your knowledge. My death should be a lesson and a reason for the system to change.”
Apparently, he had a pretty high IQ. He liked reading and writing a lot.
He was not alone. There was 17-yr old Kriti Tripathi, a student at one of the Kota's coaching centers. She jumped to her death from a five-storey building in Kota in April this year. Though she had comfortably cleared the IIT entrance exams, she complained that studies in these centers subjected the students to unbearable stress and depression in her suicide note.
"Please Government of India HRD do something about these coaching institutes. They suck and should be shut down as soon as possible," she wrote.
And there were more. There was 21-yr old Jitesh from Haryana, a student of chemical engineering at IIT-B. He committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance from the institute lab in May last year as he was depressed due to his poor academic performance. The suicide note stated that he regretted passing JEE exam to make it to IIT. There were 15-yr old Radha and Pragati from MP, who ended their life March this year by hanging from the ceiling of their rooms, for being under stress due to exams and unable to secure first rank in the examination.
The disturbing accounts are numerous. But all point to the same thing: Indian education system forces its pupils to live a pressure-filled life, demanding excellence in the form of an external reward: MARKS. This demand starts right from the beginning of school life, and decides the fate of a person- to live a qualified life (as admission to colleges is based on these MARKS cut-off), as well as a dignified life (as everyone acknowledges the merits of being a top-scorer). This system emphasizes children’s report cards, instead of making them understand and apply what they are learning. And most importantly, it never asks them if they are satisfied with what they are learning in school. Never highlighting inner growth and development.
This is what is wrong with the Indian education system.
- A pressure-filled, non-relaxing lifestyle.
"Enough studies, now go play today!" "Take some time out daily to dance, that's what you like!"
These kids never hear these sentences. All they hear is "now go study." If these students were allowed to relax daily, perhaps they would have developed a healthy resistance against the pressures of life. But no. These young people were instead pushed beyond their limits to achieve an always-going-after-marks lifestyle.
- Making report cards the supreme focus in life.
Focus on Report cards
“What do you think of your studies?”
These questions are never asked of these students. Rather what they are asked is, “Did you get the highest marks on your report card?”
- Making self-worth dependent on external rewards: marks.
Self-worth dependent on marks
"You are only worthy if you get the highest marks."
A child who is raised on this piece of wisdom will always feel unworthy whenever he scores less than the topmost. Self-worth comes from self, not from marks. And no one can always be on the top; leaving them with a sense of unworthiness for a lifetime.

INDIAN education system is doing only one thing "CONVERTING HORSES INTO DONKEYS"
Now let me explain you how.
1.Teachers never teach you.YES they never teach you they just impose it on you. You are a goof student if you "ANSWER THERE QUESTION CORRECTLY", like seriously? If I know the answer correctly then why the hell would I attend your lecture. If you ask any question you are a nuisance for them. How can someone learn if they cant even ask a question. Forget about question you have to give only correct answer this seriously makes me laugh sometimes
2.THE WORD CALLED "DISCIPLINE" - If a teacher cannot control a class of few students how the hell they can be called teachers. So due to there inability they IMPOSED a word called discipline. As a kid it's your BASIC RIGHT to make noise. Do you expect noise from someone in corporate? No! Then?
3.KILLING THE SUBJECTIVITY- Everyone knows that 2+2=4. its objective but does corporate pay it for that? HELL NO. They pay you for subjective knowledge like how to crack a deal? Does your teacher teaches you that? LOL NO
4.MERMORISING THE THINGS- This is the thing i hate most like does anyone in corporate makes you things remember? No they have google . Does remembering the date when Alexander was born make diffrence? NO

When it comes to Indian Education System, we are dependent. Yes, we are dependent on three things:
1.Understanding the concept
2.Teacher's Mood
3.Marks you obtain(which includes factors such as hand-writing, vocabulary, etc)
So, and average kid who has had troubles with his hand-writing would know the pain on getting hit by a wooden scale on his palm every week(I had a good hand-writing).
I remember a topper in my class couldn't define current and said that, "It's not exam time yet so I haven't studied!"
Why do you need to mug up the definition of current? It's a concept! You're in 4th semester of college, studying to become Electronics and Communication Engineer ffs!
I'm frustrated how people here give more importance to marks.
P.S. She has a CPI of 9.02 and had like 94% in her boards and 84 in her JEE. Compare that to her responses, you'd know what's important.
Ashwin, In the transition of amateur to a mature writer
“Me: Who is your favorite cricketer in current era?
Indian Anonymous Student(not IAS): Of course man, Kohli.
Me: Who is your favorite cinestar in current era?
He: Sharukh
Me: Who is your favorite Indian scientist in current era?
He: DUMBSTUCK”
As early as 700 B.C., there existed world’s first recognized giant university called Takshila , located in ancient India (now Pakistan) , educated thousands of students with hundreds of professors from several countries.
But where are we now? Why we are not producing as many scientists as we did in past?
Definition of education according to Collins dictionary is “The act or process of acquiring KNOWLEDGE, esp systematically during childhood and adolescence”. Now, in Indian version it can be edited as “The act or process of acquiring MARKS, esp systematically during childhood and adolescence”
Take Thomas Alva Edison, he is more famous for his 1000 failures than because of his bulb. Where is that support now? If there is one failure in our attempt, that’s it. No one will give a damn. That is why we students played/ are playing safe by opting Engineering/ MBA, together which got ridiculously more number of students than several countries.
The way students are being tested is one of the reason’s for the failure of the system. Student’s potential should be evaluated with exam. but now, student’s memory is being tested.
Generally people say that students are stones to be carved as idols by teachers. but no one care whether that stone is suitable for carving idols or not. It could be a mighty construction material or could be a raw diamond.
Most importantly, “AS LONG AS EDUCATION IS CONSIDERED AS JUST BUSINESS THERE WILL NOT BE ANY PROGRESSION IN OUR LEVEL OF EDUCATION, AS IT IS WAY BEYOND THE BUSINESS”
Reforms should Re-Form the system, should allow students just to contiNEW with their potential and shouldn’t make marks as a life and death issue, as the aim of education is to attain knowledge, not 9.5 C.G.P.A.
I think education system is trolled by many, everyone wants a change but as goes the saying “don't just wish the change, be the change” . We need to change the system ourselves , nobody else is gonna change it for us.
Prashant Singh Rathore, Analyst at Capgemini India (2016-present)
I don’t remember from which class they started to teach us National Symbols of India.
But I guess we all have learnt that
National Sports of India is HOCKEY.
and
National Language of India is HINDI.
But they taught us wrong and still teaching wrong in every school.
I went to volunteer a government school in Bangalore named Government High School, Immadihalli, Whitefield, Bengaluru on 22 May 2017.
So after taking introduction of the students participating in summer camp.
I asked them firstly with
Who is the Prime Minister of India?
Everyone shouted Modi.
Later I asked them Who is the president of India?
Few voices with again Modi and then Silence. Then one guy shouted Dhoni.
Giggled with the class. Later I answered them Pranab Mukherjee.
Now I asked Which is our National Sports?
All shouted with Hockey. I was known with the fact that it isn’t our national game.
Then I asked them Which is the National language of India?
All shouted with Hindi. I was aware of this also that it isn’t our national language it is our official language.
So I corrected them and shown them the answers written in Web by Googling them. But they are defending each others that I’m wrong.
One girl came up with the teacher who teaches them Social Studies.
So I had a discussion with him and I showed him proofs too. He was elder then me so he was hesitating in accepting it. Nobody will accept himself/herself wrong in front his/her students .
The problem is that he has also learned the same from those books which are used from over several years in the schools.
These are the students I’m volunteering that day. Two of us are volunteers and three are for the summer camp provided by school management. We are at the backside. Don’t count us as students.

9th standard:
PTA meeting
Physics Teacher: Your son is very smart. He is hardworking too.
Dad: Thanks sir! He studies well. He is passionate about physics.
Physics Teacher: Yes. He has what it takes to be an IAS Officer. Prepare him for Civil Services. He would be a great officer.
Dad: That's good to hear sir.
I am just a 9th standard guy. All I knew was that I loved applying physics to daily life activities. I knew I loved Maths too. But I did not know about my future. I did not know what I would be or what I wanted to be. I approached my teacher the next day.
Class - the next day:
Me: Sir. I like physics. What is its future.
Physics Teacher: The future of physics is full of possibilities. There is infinite scope for exploring the field.
Me: Then why did you want me to be an IAS Officer.
Physics Teacher: Its a very stable job. You get security. You can get others to do your work for you. You will have many servants. You can earn very much. Even though the salary from government is less, you get lots of gifts (not so subtle). If you pursue physics, you can't earn much.
Home:
Mom: How did the meeting go.
Dad: Great! His teacher told me that he has what it takes to even crack Civil Services.
Mom: He's too young. Let us give him a few years before we push him towards his goals.
(My mother is a professor. I am lucky. Not all are lucky to be afforded this freedom.)
Conclusion:
I tell my teacher I like his subject. He tells me it has good future. But money is the ultimate objective and it has less scope to earn money. He tells me to pursue another field.
I feel there is something fundamentally wrong if we educate our younger generation that one field has more priority over another. All are equal. It just depends on one's passion towards a field and a drive to pursue it.
As someone said: "Where would they be if Lata Mangeshkar picked up a cricket bat and Sachin Tendulkar became a singer."
Swapnil Kabra, Teaching CA students since 5 years.
NOT QUESTIONING THE BASICS:
Okay, let me ask you a simple mathematical question first.
What is (a + b)^2 ?
Every student who has been taught mathematics would just spit this answer out:
= a^2 +2ab + b^2.
(a + b)^ 2是什么?
= a^2 + 2 ab + b^2。
Now I have got an interesting perspective to this particular equation.
Let us take a and b on a line.
We have to find out the square so let us make a square like this:
Let us now mark the points a and b on this square:
Connecting the dots we get this:
Now we can find out the area of squares and rectangles:
Now what we have got finally is this:
You see this is wrong with our education system. We are taught to learn the things rather than asking all the ‘Wh’ questions.
We don't really question the basics and there is the fault in our education system.
More than to blame students, it is the whole system which is to be blamed.
Most of the times students are not even taught what is the reasoning behind basics because everyone is just interested in mugging up things rather than knowing the logic.
Newton never said - ‘Damn you apple for falling on my head’. He asked ‘Why did the apple fall?

The great Engineering Entrance Examination is the biggest mistake in today’s Indian Education System. Whether the IIT’s or the NIT’s or the rest, all are doing it.
What is the mistake exactly?
The allotment of stream to students based upon their rank in exam.
I mean to say that based upon their knowledge and intelligence in Physics, Chemistry and Maths they are allotted streams like CS,IT,ECE and many more.
Now many of you will be thinking that what is wrong with this? They are intelligent and deserves these streams.
Well, you are half right and half wrong.
They are surely intelligent but not truly deserving.
Let me tell you why.
I am going to talk about 4 of my friends. Let’s call them A,B,X and Y.
A is an intelligent guy.
Let me rephrase that
He was amazing at the NCERT level but just good at the JEE Advanced level (He scored about 140 out of 504 in advanced 2015)
我们称它们为A B X Y。
B was also good but less intelligent than A.
X was above average and Y was below average.
All in all their intelligence level in (combined NCERT and JEE Advanced) was in the order:
A>B>X>Y.
We all had opted for Computer Science in class XI.
Let me tell you that the level of coding which X and Y were doing was completely out of our league (including A and B). They could have easily beaten a college guy. They were crazy about coding Y in particular.
Their level in coding was in the following order:
A=B<X<Y
A>B>X>Y.
A = B < X < Y
But then jee mains happened.
The difference in the marks of A,B and X was about 10–15 marks with A scoring the highest among them, his score was 170. Y did not even manage to clear the cut off.
But then came the main twist.
A secured 98% in CBSE while X and Y got about 94% and Y’s was less than 90%.
Due to this A secured a rank of about 1100.
B got 15,000 and X got 13,000.
(I don't know Y’s rank but I think you all can estimate based upon his performance).
Where are they all now?
A is at NSIT pursuing CS.
B is at DTU studying MCE ( Mathematics and Computation Engineering ).
X is at IIIT-D studying ECE.
Y is at a very low grade college studying CS.
I felt devastated upon knowing this and felt very bad for Y.
EDIT 1
Found this pic
B在DTU学习MCE(数学和计算工程)。
