All people in America will say, "We are Americans." From China they are Chinese. In Russia they are Russians. Will Indian people say, "I am Indian"?

Unfortunately most of the people hardly remember that they are Indians. Literally, when I want to a theatre, only thing which grabbed my high attention  (other than movie was) they played our national anthem before starting the show. I really loved that thing, because in day to day life we are getting busy for things like singing a national anthem, but go to a movie and waste time ( not exactly wasting but I want to convey national anthem has its own status and priority ).

If the question is asked to someone while in a foreign country or by a foreigner, the answer would definitely be Indian.

如果这个问题是在国外或由外国人提问的，答案肯定是我们是印度人。

However when asked the same question while in India or by a fellow Indian, you can expect different answers.

Which is not entirely wrong I feel. The context of the question has to be considered before you pass a judgement on the patriotism of a individual.

While travelling in India or when meeting a fellow Indian for the first time, you know the person you are talking to is an Indian. If he/she asks you this question, it means they want to know about you and its not generally considered a test of patriotism. So you will obviously tell him your home city and not the name of the country which he obviously knows is india.

When a foreigner asks you in India, where you from, He obviously knows being in India as a tourist that he is talking to an Indian. So again the specific part of the country or your home town is the logical answer.

When a foreigner asks you in a foreign country, where you from, then the logical answer would be Indian.

When introducing yourself in a foreign country where people from many nationalities are found, there you are going to introduce yourself as a Indian and not as a Punjabi or Bengali.

The same goes when you are introducing yourself while in India to a class or a interview panel, the person asking the question knows you are an Indian, he is asking the question in order to know your better, so again the logical answer would be your gone city.

The thing is the answer to a question depends also on who is asking, among others. So if you ask ask me, maybe I'll also tell my state or city. But believe me if a point comes where a person from other nation or for the matter anyone questioning my nationality,  he will get only one answer, that I am an INDIAN. So doesn't matter what you tell people until, you don't forget who you really are.

It is similar to how 'Indias Daughter' criticises rapes in India while the author ignores the state in England. When you meet an outsider outside India, obviously you will introduce yourself as an Indian. Now, with this modern age the whole meaning of patriotism is changed. We show are ourselves as Indians by changing WhatsApp DP with tricolor of Indian flag. We are too busy being Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christain etc. as well as North Indians, South Indians, Gujaratis, Biharis, Assamese and many more. We are also Indians but, occasionally like:

If you ask an Indian outside India then only he will say "I am Indian" otherwise he will say I am an Assamese, I am Kannadiga, I am Bihari etc..

Since our country has different culture and language, everyone are biased towards their own language and culture. That doesn't mean that Indians have less patriotism, but they are more specific about their language and culture. It depends on the situation. If a foreigner comes upto you and asks me that question when I am in india , I will try to be specific, Because he would have already figured out that I am an indian(I will look retarded if I say "I am a Indian").

If some one asks me the same question when I am in a foreign country . Then "I am an indian" would be my answer.Because he probably doesn't even know what a bengali or a telugu means.

And this is a point less argument. Us being more patriotic is not going to help our country in any ways.There are lot of other things to worry about.

It depends upon the place where he is. As there is not much migrant or foreign population here, it is obvious that a person looking like an Indian is an Indian. That's why they say their state's name.  But if he is in other country, he will say Indian

Indians do not like it when it comes to being among the genetic class of people. I've heard from my friends abroad that foreigners refer Indians as "Asians".

Under such circumstances, we get offended and correct them by saying that we are "Indians". Clueless on how much of it is with patriotism or pride.

On the first place, the foreigner should have a common sense that he is in a place of diversity where people speak different languages and follow different cultures and traditions.

What if we ask the foreigner the same question, when we visit his/her country as a tourist? Even he says the same thing. (Name of the place where he belongs)

We Indians have a habit of scolding our own people even though the mistake is not from our end and praise the foreign culture. First we need to change that attitude at least in front of foreigners.
