BEIJING: China has announced a modest increase of 7 percent in its military budget for this year. But the expected expenditure of $145 billion in 2017 will be over three times the size of India's defence budget for 2017-18.

Agree. The figure of $145 billion for 2017 is way too low. The Stockholm Research Institute monitors the defence budgets of all nations and publishes the data annually. It reported that in 2016 India spent $51.1 billion on defence and China''s expenditure was $205 billion. Four times higher than India. US intelligence based on the massive expansion of the Chinese navy in particular is of the view China has been understating its defence expenditure for several years now. US surveillance satellites that can secure high resolution images from 20 miles up monitor basics such as construction of new warships and the Americans can count. Presently Washington for example is keeping tabs on the progress of the new Chinese air craft carrier and publishing photographs on line. They know for example that Beijing has just launched the fourth in a series of "super sized" heavily armed destroyers that are designed to take out an air craft carrier. China is not about to share its true figure with any nation.

India is aiming to be a superpower. check the speeches by Modi Rajnath etc. It''s the money which is not allowing us to be the one as there is not enough money to pour in R&D like China not enough money to buy advanced weapons in bulk like China did. Now China buying and indigenously manufacturing within China.
Currently we have no option apart from to be defensive in front of China as they hev much no of ships fighters tanks IFV etc compared to India
