Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) chairman K Sivan has seen a major setback  in the first mission to be launched by the agency since he took over, something most space agency chiefs have not had to endure. Eighteen hours after the GSAT-6A lost contact with its ground station, Sivan spoke to TOI about the mission.

What exactly transpired after the 2nd orbit-raising operations?

Everything went on as prescribed, a picture-perfect launch and two textbook orbit raising manoeuvres and then the satellite suddenly stopped communication. We are yet to determine what exactly went wrong.

一切都按预期进行，一次完美的发射升空外加两次教科书式的升轨操作之后卫星突然停止了通信联系。我们目前还不确定出了什么问题。

When a satellite gets de-linked, it goes into a ‘safe mode’, is that the case here?

卫星一旦失去联系就会自动进入“安全模式”，现在是这种情况吗？

Generally the spacecraft returns from ‘safe mode’ in a matter of minutes, it returns in about one to five minutes. This is, however, very unusual as it did not happen. We are unable to establish any contact with the satellite, but our teams are on the job continuously.

一般来说飞船需要几分钟的时间从安全模式返回正常模式，大约是一到五分钟。然而这次失灵了，非常不寻常。我们无法与卫星建立任何联系，但我们的团队仍在继续努力。

What are the chances of recovery?

恢复的可能性有多大？

We are hopeful, but as of now there is no contact with the satellite. If we are just able to speak with the satellite, we can get it back to working as there are several redundancy mechanisms including back-up power. But everything hinges on re-establishing contact.

So unfortunate, but this does not impact in any way our belief in ISROs capabilities in launching bigger satellites. This collection of learnings will only bolster our belief. We''ll fund ten more such satellites, don''t worry ISROs.

Rocket science is inherently very risky, with millions of critical components, complex mathematics, flight dynamics and thousands of other factors coming into play and any one of them can spoil a mission. All space agencies have majority missions as failures and a few successes, it is ISRO that has made success a habit. Do not worry, if we learn from our failures we make it a success.

Satellite technology is an uncertain game. It's not 100% success for developed countries too. India's success record on installing & working of satellite has not been bad.
