●Rochester Grammar School gave pupils a worksheet fora slave auction
●It outlined 16 different lots, including 'two Felupslaves' and 'two Krumen slaves'
●Parents slammed the exercise on social media, dubbingit 'racism by the back door'
A school has beencriticised for asking pupils to take part in a fictional slave auction as partof a history lesson.
Year 8 pupils at Rochester Grammar School inKent were told to pretend they had £100 and 'consider what sort of slave your business will need' as part ofthe exercise.
A worksheet, posted on social media by angryparents, shows 16 different lots, including 'two Felup slaves','two Krumen slaves' and 'five Yoruba boys'.

The parents have dubbedthe worksheet 'racism by the back door'.
Posting the exercise on Facebook, Cheryl Phoenixsaid: 'I suppose they feel this is appropriate and there should be no offencetaken to black students. Maybe we should "JUST GET OVER IT".
'It's a harmless maths question, with nohistorical or current feeling attached to any parties.'
Shirley Palmer added: 'This is state of Britisheducation in 2017. We have been here before in the past. This type of materialis not allowed in English schools.
Shirley Palmer
'All parents must complain were ever they seeit. This is from Rochester Grammar School. It's racism by the back door set toensure that black children continue to fail in the education system.
'It is psychologically damaging and the teacherknows it. Be visually aware black parents.'
The worksheet asked pupils to consider whichcombination would be most suitable for their business.
But the school has defended the exercise, whichthey claim forms part of the Department for Education's history curriculum.
A school spokesman told Kent Online: 'Wecategorically condemn slavery and racism of any kind, whether historic orpresent, and are extremely proud of our multi-cultural school, and the tolerantand inclusive atmosphere that we foster every day to ensure all our studentsare well-rounded young people.
A Rochester Grammar School (above)spokesman said they 'categorically condemn slavery and racism of any kind'
'This means weabsolutely teach students about the horrors of the slave trade, and theworksheet adapts primary sources of the time to illustrate the awful reality ofslavery. We also include additional lessons on the horrors of the MiddlePassage and life on plantations.'

Parents have to be careful: at a school that Iknow there is a man on a crucifix who seems in great pain. He was a Jew andthis toleration of cruelty to Jews seems anti-semitic. Then I know a schoolwhere they did this play, I think it was called Macbeth, where - you won'tbelieve this - there were witches on the stage. And I don't even like tomention a play called A midsummer night's dream and they kept referring to家长们要留意了:我知道在一所学校里有个男人被挂在十字架上,看起来很痛苦。

This looks like a part of a bigger exercise withsource material from the time, auction adverts, drawings from the time etc, theidea is to encourage discussion and analysis to try to understand how and whythings happened in the past. Pretty sure they will all have come out of themodule knowing how vile the process was. If the kids are racists they will havepicked that up from home.

What part of history is this lesson taken from.I ask as Britain got ride of the slave trade a long time before even theAmericans did. And let's also ask the question what outcome did they expectfrom doing this lesson? We all know the buying and selling of a human being ispart of history, we just don't know the expected outcome of this lesson on thepupils of the school. This is important to uate if this could have beendone in a different way.

Yet again the soft and fluffy brigade are out inforce cashing in their racism cards. Stop being so sensitive and get a gripwould you? The race card thing is getting REALLY boring now. I wish I hadsomething in my back pocket that I could bring out every time someone did orsaid something that I didn't like but, unfortunately for me, I can't, I'mwhite.

I'm with the school on this. How can peoplelearn from history if they don't know what happened? This immersion into theslave market is designed to get them really thinking about what it would havebeen like to have been a slave, and the consequences of the actions taken inthose days. I wish people would stop seeking to take offence when none isclearly meant.

So what? History is littered with horrendousthings such as slavery. Not talking about it or learning about it in Historyclasses doesn't change History. And learning about past atrocities should helpus avoid repeating them in future.

Although i'm a believer in Grammar Schoolsespecially those which once existed in Britain's provincial inner-cities Icannot condone the mentality behind this excercise. It trivialises the days ofempire where slaves were bought and transported.

Yet again the easily offended scream 'racist'without realising the context. We mustn't filter the past, and unfortunatelythis did happen, and must be recognised, which the worksheet does. While itcould have been presented differently, the accusation that this is 'racism bythe backdoor' is ridiculous.

Isn't the important point here is that this isthe kind of callous disregard for human feelings that depicts the slave trade.I think as long as the point of the exercise is to draw attention to this, it'sfine - those are facts and actions that people at the time considered and took.If we are to understand just how brutal slavery is, we need to put thisperspective on it. That said, I myself am white (but come from a verymulticultural background) so perhaps I do not have the emotional understandingto cover every pupil in the class.
