SYDNEY: A plane heading to Shanghai returned safely to Sydney after an in-flight problem left a gaping hole in the engine casing.

一架飞往上海的航班，发现飞机左发动机前部的整流罩被撕开一个巨大的洞口，后来安全返航。

China Eastern said the crew on Flight 736 noticed damage to the air inlet on the left engine after takeoff Sunday evening and the captain decided to return.

东航MU736航班，起飞不久后机组人员发现左发动机出现异常，决定立即返航。

The airline said on its Sina Weibo microblog that the plane landed safety and the airline was taking care of passengers' needs. The A330 plane from Airbus has two engines.

东航在新浪微博上称，飞机安全降落。东航悉尼场站已妥善做好旅客行程的后续保障。据报道，这架空客A330飞机有两个发动机。

Passengers told Australian media they heard a massive noise and smelled something burning.

据报道，有乘客称在飞机上听到了巨响和激烈摩擦声并闻到烧焦的味道

Good that everyone is safe. Modern airliners all have built in redundancy for handling these types of emergencies. I have seen the damaged engine in Twitter pictures released. It seems to be a case of poor maintenance as the engine cowling cover literally sheared off!
