MUMBAI: As India-China relations continueto make headlines daily, a group ofprincipals in the city has appealed totheir students to not use 'Made in China'stationery in schools.The Mumbai School Principals' Association, which claims to have allegiance toover 1,500 schools in the Mumbai metropolitan region, is sending outmessages through apps, hoping to create awareness and evoke patriotism amongstudents.

Association members feel it is a small stepthat could show support to Indian soldiers on the border. "Students mustbe aware about problems the country is facing. Stationery, like pens, compassboxes and erasers are all made in China. Even if we are able to hurt theeconomic gains China makes through our country by a little, it will mean we aredoing our bit," said Prashant Redij from the association. The associationwill print a circular and send the appeal to all schools. "It is theschools which must instil patriotism among students," he added.

We have heardhow Japanese students are told about not using American products froma very young age," said Fr Francis Swamy, joint secretary, ArchdiocesanBoard of Education (ABE), which governs over 150 schools in the city.

Teachers also feel the focus must remain oneducating students in the right manner. "If you just tell students to stopusing Chinese goods, they may not understand the problem. Teachers must talkabout the global problem in the classroom and inform students about currentaffairs so that they have their facts right. Also, today the market is full ofstationery that is made in China that finding alternatives will bedifficult," said Vilas Parab, a teacher at Balmohan Vidyamandir, Dadar.

But, students must definitely be made aware of the situation and thiscould be done by using available audio-visuals and gadgets. They must be givenreasonable information," said Uttara Sahasrabuddhe, professor ofinternational politics at University of Mumbai.
