It's rare for an American student to speak at any Chinese graduation ceremony let alone at one of the top schools in the country. In Cody Abbey's case when he took the stage in front of thousands of students at the prestigious Peking University last week the circumstances were in many ways unprecedented.

The 24-year-old wanted to give a speech that would resonate with Chinese and foreigners alike — to reassure people that at least some Americans still believe they share this world.

“The reason the new president of my country likes China is because he admires the Great Wall” Abbey told the university's graduating master's students Friday in fluent Mandarin.

Laughter rose from the room though Abbey said he had not meant to be funny.

“He admires it not because the Great Wall is a part of China’s cultural heritage” he continued from the podium. “Rather he admires it because just like the First Qin Emperor he wants to build a barrier like this and cut off Americans from those outside our borders.”

In days to come those lines would spread far beyond the campus walls.

In the western media it appears that there are more and more China haters. But there are also more and more Westerners moving to China for studies career games or just for the simple reason to get out of their countries. Some of them remained in China for more than a decade. One thing for sure the group of China haters are more or less the same people. Can they give a logical reason as to why there are more and more westerners moving to China a country which they assumed to be lawless.

I'm sure the Chinese thought this guy was a real moron. Of course they love to see a foreigner trashing his own country but in their hearts they find that sort of thing disgusting. To have no respect for your own country is not something the Chinese are promoting.

Building a border wall got to be worst idea of all time by our govt'. I mean if the wall is 12 feet high I just get a +12-foot ladder and some rope. A MUCH more effective method is an old law that we have called the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. We just need to re-enact this law and change all the words "Chinese" to "Mexicans" or whatever. Don't laugh that law worked great because even to-this-day the U.S. population has ONLY 2% (6 million) of Chinese/ Chinese Americans and China alone has over 1400 million Chinese! Just to get a perspective the Irish came to the U.S at about the time the Chinese came. Ireland has about 6.5 million Irish currently the U.S. has 33 million Irish Americans. Yes Sir we kept almost all the Chinese away from our U.S. soil just with that law alone!
