BEIJING: Having conquered world markets and challenged US political and military leadership, China has set its sights on becoming a global powerhouse in a different field: scientific research. It now has more laboratory scientists than any other country, outspends the entire European Union on research and development, and produces more scientific articles than any other nation except the United States.

But in its rush to dominance, China has stood out in another, less boastful way. Since 2012, the country has retracted more scientific papers because of faked peer reviews than all other countries and territories put together, according to Retraction Watch, a blog that tracks and seeks to publicize retractions of research papers.

Now, a recent string of high-profile scandals over questionable or discredited research has driven home the point in China that to become a scientific superpower, it must first overcome a festering problem of systemic fraud.

Forget China. They will survive - will send the corrupt to be shot. Can India do this ... or even dream of doing this ? If the answer is yes then 100 % of BSP, DMK ..... 95% of SP, 90% of Congress have Ben stated to be corrupt. What treatment they wil get.

Indians who are jumping in excitation on this negative news about of Chinese academia should remember that in India as well many people resort to malpractices to publish research articles. But that does not attract a full news article because our overall contribution is meager anyway. China understands clearly what it takes to be a superpower. That''s why they are investing so much in research and development. Naturally there will be aberrations. But ultimately they will prevail if they continue on this path and we Indians can only just watch it.

Chinese have always been known for unethical practices. I'm not surprised that they engaged in scientific fraud. But India shouldn't gloat too much as we don't even do research, we are still stuck over issues like saving cows, poverty, hunger and rapes.
