BEIJING: China has commissioned a fully automated "most advanced" marine science ship which will be deployed in the Indian Ocean.

The vessel Xiang Yang Hong 01 was commissioned on Saturday in the eastern port city of Qingdao.

The 100-metre long ship with displacement of 4980 tonnes and a range of 15000 nautical miles has plentiful remote sensing equipment to explore as deep as 10000 meters.

India needs to invest substantially more money in defence if it is to do an effective job of monitoring potential threats and incursions into the Indian Ocean. It begs the question as to why China has deployed a very expensive vessel in India''s backyard to explore the Ocean so far from home. The answer is that the communists are looking for oil and gas deposits These days seismic equipment is used to prospect for new reserves. This equipment generates sound waves which are reflected back from the layers of rock and sediment in the ground. From the sound waves geologists can estimate whether the layers could contain oil or natural gas. At sea the sound waves are generated by what is known as an airgun which works with compressed air. The echoes reflected back are received via hydrophones on the ocean floor or the research vessel. Certainly if this "Science" vessel locates fossil fuel the Chinese will construct drilling platforms to extract it.
