India overtakes China to Become No 1 Economy in the world . 2018 outlook: India Asia's tiger cub, but China to see start of long-lasting growth slowdown .

NEW DELHI : Asia’s sweet spot looks stretched and there's a rising risk of painful snapback, but among the region, India, Indonesia and the Philippines are the new rising stars. This is the observation of Nomura India in Asian markets outlook for 2018. The brokerage calls these three countries 'tiger cubs' among the emerging market pack. Stock market returns The brokerage expects double-digit equity returns across China, Korea and India, primarily driven by strong earnings growth. India remains its preferred pick. It is expecting 10-15 per cent returns from Chinese equity indices, mid-double digit returns for Korea's Kospi and 17 per cent equity return for India. For India, earnings momentum is seen picking up pace and sustain beyond 2018. "We expect government reforms like the goods and services tax, the implementation of the bankruptcy code and a push on infrastructure buildout to have a positive impact on growth and valuation multiples," it said. For India, the brokerage is overweight on sectors such as financials, auto, capital goods, construction and healthcare, while it largely remains underweight cement, IT and consumer staples. Chinese & Indian economies Nomura sees a greater risk of a spike in China credit defaults and capital flight in 2018 than in 2017.

The brokerage noted that China has lowered its GDP growth target in 2018 and reformer Liu He is promoted to vice premier in charge of the financial sector, which supports its views that 2018 will see China focusing on reforms over growth. "The implication of all this is that China finally starts to address its moral hazard problem, with banks and bondholders repricing credit and starting to demand a higher risk premium, causing a continued widening of spreads between high yield and high grade credit," the brokerage said. On the other hand, the foreign brokerage said that Asian cubs, especially India, could be about to experience the same phenomena as China did over 2005-15.

The brokerage believes FDI inflows into India and Asean-5 will surge to around $240 billion by 2025 from $100 billion per year now. It is bullish on India both cyclically and structurally. The economy, it said, is in the early stage of a cyclical recovery and will register 7.5-8 per cent growth in H1 2018 -- the start of a robust and enduring expansion. China, on the other hand, is biting the bullet on the more painful reforms, leading to a long-lasting growth slowdown, the brokerage said. Yet inflation in China is set to rise and for this country the credit risk differentiation will be the big theme for 2018, Nomura said.

PM Modi and reforms : The brokerage said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has "turned his lieutenants into farsighted policy makers, building the foundations for higher, sustainable growth, not the old-style, policy-induced boom-bust cycles." Together with prudent monetary and fiscal policies, and India’s rich endowment of a cheap, young and abundant labour, this makes the brokerage confident that it is on the verge of unlocking significantly more growth potential. Domestic politics and a surge in oil prices though remains key risk.

Snapback : The broking firm said that Asia’s high debt leaves it exposed to a global repricing of credit risk, possibly triggered by inflation surprises. The brokerage believes that the recovery in Asian exports masks structurally weak private domestic demand in several economies, leaving the region more exposed than it may first appear to a number of downside risks that, on our count, outnumber the upside ones. "It is notoriously difficult to pinpoint the timing of a snapback but if we were to venture our best guess we would say Q2 and Q3 are the high-risk quarters," it said.

stories or just heard a story from someone, I’m a foreigner living in China and never seen such things as you said, totally unthinkable .you know in China if a cop touches a citizen the cop would lose his/her job permanently ,that much respect they give to their citizens I have seen it with my own eyes. In India humans rights at its lowest as far as I know , people get beaten to death over cows, women get beaten to death over witch suspicion, i read a read news few days ago that a Hindu guy butchered and set fire on a Muslim person to his death. I’m not trying to insult your country what I am trying to say is that if you compare both countries you will be shocked I can tell you that especially me as a person who have visited both China and India . In China girls go out 2/3 in the morning alone, as I have seen China is one of the most secured nations on the planet . I don’t think even a man can go out at night in India. By the way India is at least 100 years behind China, in terms of security, decency, social security , IT sector, infrastructure, innovations , AI,technology and living standard etc. I can tell you one thing Chinese people enjoy more freedom than Indian people , democracy isn’t everything when don’t have basic security in a society.?

In 1970’s China and India had the same economy now China is 5 times larger than you. China did not become 2nd largest over night or with a magic wand. If your democracy is so good and give you freedom than why are you still poor? Democracy isn’t a measurement for development or freedom level. China does not have mob attack unlike India , Chinese people don’t kill each other over cows, or target people over religious or cast basis. China is a vey different country than you think. It’s living standard as high as other developed nations. I’m sure you never set foot out of India so it’s easy for you to say that. Indians always say we will do this , we will do that ... and still saying for the last 30 years , the main difference is that India dreams on China works on. The main difference I have encountered both in China and India is that , when I asked Chinese they would answer we need to go a long way even though their developments are much better than most of developed nations but on the other side Indians would say we are the best in everything , and they would never confess their problems.?

India a country with 1.31 billion people which GDP is only 2.1 trillion dollars, you don’t have any permanent sit at the U.N. Most of them admire the government.As a foreigner when i go out everyday I just see their developments. and security strength which is one of the best in the world. You have no idea.there was a documentary on BBC showing that China was making so much money that it had to spend money in order to control the overflow of money and keep the world’s economy going , so these ghosts cities are results of too much money so they had to spend these money for healthy economy. China does not have debts because there’s no need for it. Instead The US  owes China over 4 trillion dollars. China’s foreign currency reserve is the largest with over  4 trillion dollars which is twice the size of India’s total GDP size.China simply earns money instead of wasting money. Also you are just thinking this will happen, that will happen, you can not assume something without a solid reason. I never seen or heard here Chinese people liking democracy at all, not sure where you get all these fake news.?

Singh well that’s a different story from ghost cities , ghost cities are result from over flowing Money which they had to spend in order to keep the world and domestic economy going, ya every country has debt problems , what about the US ? It has 14 trillion dollars of debts, apart from it US also owes money to China about 4 trillion dollars which is also twice the size of India’s GDP size. The last 10 years China spent over 1 trillion dollars in Africa and they already assigned 5 trillion dollars for one belt one road program, you have no idea how much money they have now. You could look that up by “China GDP growth” and it shows since 2012 it has been declining because of the rising debt they have.Maybe you have to get your delusional thinking to understand what is going on in your country.Yes they have a lot of good things but it has been all credit and rising debt and it shows in the GDP growth rate.India we are growing the same rate as in China because We implemented something that we never used in centuries which is have “one nation tax” which is called the “GST Tax in India” every country has used it but not India we had a different tax system which haul our growth. Little do you know the complete truth.

I agree India is the fastest growing economy in the world but we aren't no.1 yet, it takes time for at least 20 years. As per the World Bank Report 2017 says India ll be the no.1 economy by 2040 if India can maintain the current growth rate. But our major problem is corruption but I believe under Modi's govt we are eradicating corruption and corrupted politicians very well so lets hope for the best and we as Indians ll work hard for the betterment of this incredible democratic country.?

China, with its one-child policy and inferior technology, just overtook Japan a fews years ago, as the world number 2 economy. I draw my judgment based on facts. I will believe India has potential as the greatest world power when I see her overtake Japan as 3rd largest economy, follow by overtaking China at the number 2 position and then, finally, overtaking the U.S. But before any of these happen, I can't do hyper-extrapolation of India suddenly hyper-jump from the seventh to world number one position. Only Indians have such rare talents. Not me.?
