Chinese police are joining Italian officers on the streets of Rome and Milan in an experiment aimed at helping tourists from China feel safe, Italy's interior ministry has announced.

The experiment is the first of its kind in Europe, China's ambassador to Italy, Li Ruiyu, said at a meeting to announce the project, according to a statement from the Italian ministry.

Absolutely on the nail. China's police never do anything unless they are paid extra (I don't mean their salary - that is what they figure they are paid to show up for work) to do it. You want to get the police to do their job and catch a criminal? You'd better spend '000's of Rmb wining and dining the head of the bureau to get him to dispatch his men, and then keep making very large progress payments until you get "justice". China's police are a standing joke among the people. Try finding a Chinese drama showing the police at all, never mind in a good light. You can't, because nobody would watch it.

Four Chines Police to help some close to a million Chinese Tourist feel safe in Rome is a bit difficult to comprehend. It would be far better the Some Rome Police to learn Chinese and cultivate a better relationship with China. Hope the Vatican does not intend to turn them to Catholics.

1. Xinjiang and Beijing have both witnessed terrorist attacks from Islamic extremists. 2. China is also awash with pickpockets: trust me, I've seen them in action and intervened several times. The difference is that abroad, Chinese tourists obviously stand out from say, most Europeans because of their ethnicity. Tourists are often targeted due to the likelihood of them carrying cash and expensive electronic devices. If I were a pickpocket, I'd probably target Chinese tour groups as well. I seriously doubt that having Chinese police on the streets will deter thieves but it'll make the Chinese tourists feel more secure and help maintain the large numbers visiting the country.

the route between China and Italy was mapped 700 years ago by Venetian merchant traveller Marco Polo No, it wasn't. It's highly unlikely Polo ever travelled further than the Middle East. Far from mapping a route across China, any sense of direction vanishes from his (ghost-written) narrative once it reaches there, and his descriptions of most towns become little more than shopping lists. His contemporary Pegolotti did a better job of compiling the accounts of other traders, despite also never having been to China.

This is a good idea, to allay the fears of Chinese tourists. The Chinese from China are not use to terrorism, pick pockets, Middle Eastern refugees swarming their streets like Europeans are. I don't think it's an accident that Islamic terrorists have struck London, Madrid, Brussels and Paris and not Shanghai or Beijing ... Europe lacks the tough law enforcement you find in China. Perhaps they can teach the Europeans a thing or two on how to crush Islamist terror, as well as rioting students.

Its not the first time for a foreign police force to be patrolling outside their country. Weren't there bobbies patrolling in Spain? Anyway its only a token presence. If they deploy uniformed Italian police in Beijing there will be crowd control issues as the locals scramble for selfies.
