AMSTERDAM: Judges at an arbitrationtribunal in The Hague onTuesday rejected China's claims to economic rights across large swathes of the South China Sea ina ruling that will be claimed as a victory by the Philippines.

阿姆斯特丹：位于海牙的国际法院周二拒绝了中国对南海大片区域的经济权利，这次裁决将被菲律宾视为胜利。

"There was no legal basis for China to claim historic rights to resourceswithin the sea areas falling within the 'nine-dash line'," the court said,referring to a demarcation line on a 1947 map of the sea, which is rich inenergy, mineral and fishing resources.

“中国对九段线内的海洋资源的历史声索没有法律依据，”法庭称，指的是1947年海图上的一条虚线，南海富含能源，矿产和渔业资源。

In the 497-page ruling, judges also found that Chinese law enforcement patrolshad risked colliding with Philippine fishing vessels in parts of the sea andcaused irreparable damage to coral reefs with construction work.

在这份497页的判决书中，中国的执法巡逻在部分海域造成和菲律宾渔船碰撞的风险，而其建设行为对珊瑚礁造成了不可弥补的损坏。

"None of the Spratly islands grant China an exclusive economic zone,"the Hague tribunal said.

Not so fast. While it suits us in this case, as a precedence it may not be goodfor us. We will have disputes now with Bangaladesh, Thailand (for AndamanIslands), etc. So is going to be the case with US also. So both US and Indiamight not overwhelmingly or even loudly approve of this ruling.
