MANILA——Japan's new Foreign Minister Taro Kono on Monday brushed aside a provocative remark by his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi during their first talks since Kono assumed his post last week, saying he wants Beijing to "learn how to behave as a big power."

马尼拉报道——日本新任外交大臣河野太郎自上周上任以来，周一首次与其中国的对手王毅举行会谈，会谈中他说希望北京“学会如何表现的像个大国”，然而他的挑衅言辞被王毅视如无物。

At the bilateral meeting in Manila earlier in the day, the outset of which was open to the media, Wang told Kono, "Frankly speaking, we were disappointed to hear your comments" in the East Asia Summit foreign ministers' meeting.

马尼拉的东亚外交部长峰会中，中日双边会谈在当天早些时候举行，会谈的开场向媒体公开，王毅告诉河野：“坦率的说，我们对你的评论感到失望”。

"We felt that you were forced to fulfill a mission that the United States had given you," Wang said, apparently referring to Kono's earlier remarks regarding China's military buildup in the contested waters of the South China Sea.

Kono had suggested he would remind Beijing of the importance of the rule of law in dealing with disputes in the waters, one of the world's vital shipping routes, where several ASEAN nations have overlapping territorial claims with China.

"I will call for demilitarization in the South China Sea," Kono told reporters Sunday.

Kono, who is acquainted with Wang, a former ambassador to Japan, also said at the meeting, "I became foreign minister in a very difficult era when we are facing North Korean issues and various maritime issues."

Kono, who assumed his post in a cabinet reshuffle on Thursday, has also called on China to do more to address the threat of North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Beijing is one of the five permanent members of the Security Council and the chair of stalled six-party talks involving the two Koreas, China, Japan, Russia and the United States, aimed at denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

The old lapdog argument we see here all the time. No, it couldn't possibly be that China is militarizing with a goal of controlling the entire South China Sea through which not just trade but energy lifelines traverse to Japan, South Korea, Taiwan. Philippines, etc etc. It is not in the world's interest to let China claim these vast international waters as their own in violation of international law.

How to behave as a big power? I think Japan giving this advice is akin to a deaf person telling others how to appreciate music or a blind person teaching calligraphy. Well, being a big power doesn't entail being a yes-man to America and always looking for praises from other countries but being able to make your own decisions. I think these Japanese politicians are just getting tired at being unable to play catch-up with China even as they throw money away to other countries.

如何表现的像个大国？我觉得日本的这个建议就好比聋子告诉别人如何欣赏音乐或者瞎子教别人书法。好吧，作为大国不需要对美国唯唯诺诺，或者总是期望来自别国的夸奖，而是能够做出自己的决定。我觉得日本的政客们已经厌倦了不停的向别国撒钱却还是赶不上中国这件事。

"Grow up and act your age". Sounds legit to me. China is flexing its military muscle and attempting to push its territories beyond it's mainland into the south seas as far as it can push.

All this dispute over who owns what and who has the rights I think is a pile of "dung". This is the way I think it should be, a Country's right should stop where the "low tide " stops! No Country should have any rights to where they think the boundary might be. A ship should have the right to pass any where, where there is Ocean Water.
