Donald Trump says he doesn't blame Chinafor taking advantage of America

President Donald Trump has criticised the“very one-sided and unfair” trade relationship between the US and China, butstopped short of castigating Chinese President Xi Jinping by saying he doesn'tblame the country for taking advantage of the US.

Speaking after the announcement of newbusiness deals between US and Chinese companies, Trump said the US and China“must immediately address the unfair trade practices that drive” the tradedeficit, along with barriers to market success, forced technology transfers andintellectual property theft.

“But I don't blameChina,” he said. “After all, who can blame a country for being able to takeadvantage of another country for the benefit of its citizens?

To applause, he said: “I give China greatcredit.”

Trump's comments came during his second dayin China and after lengthy meetings with Xi. The day included announcementsthat the US and China had signed agreements valued at more than $250 billionfor products including US-made jet engines, auto parts, liquefied natural gasand beef.

Such contract signings are a fixture offoreign leader visits to Beijing and are intended to defuse foreign complaintsabout China's trade policies. Many of the contracts signed on Thursday appearedto represent purchases that Chinese mobile phone makers, airlines and othercustomers would have made anyway, but the signings were scheduled for Trump'svisit.

Others included a cooperation framework onshale gas and a memorandum of understanding on industrial development.

It's “a way of distracting from the factthat there's been no progress in China on structural reform, market access orthe big issues that the president has tried to make progress on with regard toChina,” said Elizabeth Economy, the Asia studies director at the Council onForeign Relations.

Trump had made narrowing themultibillion-dollar US trade deficit with China a priority for hisadministration. During the presidential campaign, he accused China of “rapingour country” on trade and pledged to minimise the countries' trade imbalance.

China's trade surplus with the UnitedStates in October widened by 12.2 percent from a year earlier, to $26.6billion, according to Chinese customs data released on Wednesday. The totalsurplus with the United States for the first 10 months of the year rose to $223billion.

For his part, Xi promised a more openbusiness environment for foreign companies in China and said his country wascommitted to further opening its economy to foreign investment. He offered nospecifics.

“China will not closeits doors” and will open them “even wider,” he said, pledging that foreigncompanies in China, including American ones, will find the market “more open, more transparent and more orderly.”

The United States and other tradingpartners have been pressing Beijing to give their companies more access to itsstate-dominated economy.

Before the meetings, China rolled out thered carpet for Trump, treating him to an elaborate welcome ceremony on theplaza outside the Great Hall of the People before the leaders turned to theirprivate talks.

Trump looked on approvingly as a Chinesehonour guard played the national anthems of both countries, cannons boomed andsoldiers marched. He clapped and smiled as children waving US and Chinese flagsand flowers screamed and jumped wildly.

China also poured on the pomp and pageantryfor Trump's arrival on Wednesday. The President and First Lady Melania Trumpwere greeted at the airport by dozens of jumping children who waved US andChinese flags. The couple spent the first hours of their visit on a privatetour of the Forbidden City, Beijing's ancient imperial palace. It's usuallyteeming with tourists but was closed to the public for the presidential visit.

The Trumps walked alongside Xi and his wifethrough the historic site and admired artefacts from centuries' past. Trumpposed for photos and, with a wave of his hand, joked to Xi about the reporterswatching. And he laughed and clapped along during an outdoor opera featuringcolourful costumes, martial arts and atonal music.

Trump is a buffoon and criminal. I amashamed to be an American. He is not my president. Corporate Capitalism is notmy religion, is it yours?

It's worth remembering that the last twonational leaders that threatened the US dollar were murdered and theircountries decimated (Saddam and Gaddafi)
Do you think the global thugs are going tohave a go at China? (definitely not - bullies don't pick on those that canfight back)
Best of all though is the safe knowledgethat the rise of China was facilitated almost entirely by the US corporationstrying to get cheap Chinese labour for their products - in the process theyhave f----- the US economically - and now China is buying her oil imports inYuan (or gold if you prefer ) thereby f------ the supremacy of thepetro-dollar.
You could not make it up

"Who can blame a country for takingadvantage of another country" will go down wonderfully in a country thathas never forgotten the humiliation and exploitation visited upon it for ahundred years by western powers, including America.  A country that onlyin 1997 regained Hong Kong, seized from it by British naval force in 1841, andthat still has not regained Taiwan, whose independence from 1949 to today restson American power and hostility.
Workers paid a pittance for making Trump'sties, and his profits, will appreciate how unfair they are being to citizens ofthe world's richest superpower.  They will realise that it will have tostop, and that they will have to lose their jobs so that America may becomegreat again.
Whenever Trump opens his mouth, wherever hemay be, he is addressing one audience and one only:  white Americanswithout college education.  Nobody else matters.

it's true.  and the irony is thatwhite americans w/o college education are the ones suffering the most underimperalist policies forced upon the have-nots by the likes of orange cheetoman...
The further a society drifts from the truththe more it will hate those that speak it
the reality is that much of teh west haslooked t reduce costs and process is shipped to china because of very lowlabour costs. The problem is once you have shifted it you lose the know how .The next generation of widget is made in china. We have lost the knowledge tomake our own widgets. In UK, we cannot even make trains, we invented them...Rain Hill Trials !  It took 18 months to bring in a Pendilino (Italy) asit took that amount of time to train engineers. We have lost the knowledge ofhow to design and build many things because its cheaper to outsource to chinaet al.

在英国,我们甚至不能制造火车,是我们发明了火车……Rainhill Trials(译者注:指1829年英国着名的火车比赛,推动了蒸汽机车的改进)!

dougs.
that's only half the problem.  theother half is you have destroyed the middle class in your own country, so itwill lose its ability to afford to buy all the stuff.

It′s true to say that China′s trade isone-sided in relation to American workers, a situation which the electorate indesperation turned to Trump to reverse, unfortunately for them, too late.George H Bush seeded China to become the major player that they are today, andBill Clinton was only to happy to sell out the American worker and destroyAmerican manufacturing so US Corporations stock prices could soar to the sky.

I would have thought that America destroyedAmerican manufacturing, and the country as a whole is being destroyed by Trump,he's already turned the US into a global laughing stock and seems determined todo the same to it's people.

Trump's comments remind me of a US Carmanufacturer's CEO who complained it was unfair of the Japanese to expect hiscompany to make right-hand drive models for export toJapan.

But he's using short term tools that willnot build a stable economic solution.
In fact he's not really doing anythingdifferent from previous Republican administration's
Increased spending on military to tax cutsand financial sector deregulation have a combined "feel good factor"but they ultimately set the US economy up for a fall further down the road thatsome other President will have to deal with.
It's straight from the Republican classicalplaybook.
What USA desperately needs to do is addressit's enormous national debt issue - after all, who owns that debt and whatleverage does that give the owners?
Increased spending and reduced tax do notdo this.
