NAGOYA —While Chinese tourists’ shopping sprees in Japan continue at such a pace that “explosive buying” has become the buzzword of the year, an academic survey has shown that Japanese landscapes, culture and art may be more alluring than the bright lights of the cities’ famous shopping districts.

Maybe, but I'd rather trust how people vote with their feet than with their mouth. Follow the money trail and see how much money tourists leave at Kyoto and how much at BicCamera.

Perhaps these things, like being at an onsen, seeing Fuji-san, seeing cherry blossom and visiting drama sets (all with accompanying photographic proof) are considered the things to do while in Japan for Chinese tourists. Narikin/nouveau riche tourism is often like that. It is about being seen in the right places.

According to a couple of Chinese tourists I had a chance to talk to, they said Chinese come to Japan because they are treated much better than in other places like Hong Kong and Taiwan and other Asian destination.

Maybe that's because the Japanese are too nice to tell them off when they misbehave, which is like a dozen times a day.

Tourism, best diplomacy japanese public can offer to chinese public. The hospitality and freedom on japan will soften their mind and tone down china-japan goverment spat.much effective than abe meet xi. Its free and japanese public efforts. Its better to have majority chinese tourists have good impression of japan than what crazy politicians painting each other as aggressor. Politician come and go, but chinese tourists will remember their good stay in japan much lingering.

Tons of Chinese tourists in here Shinjuku, and they are well behaved. They smoke in the smoking areas (unlike some Europeans who don't seem to understand what a sign with a cigarette crossed out means), stand in line to buy, and are just being nice. I think it is better since Chinese can travel individually now instead of travelling in groups like before.

This article and these conclusions were drawn from a meager sample of 115 respondents? And I'm guessing a non-randomized sample. This is why the world walks around backing up their arguments with, "Well, I read in the news that...", slowly turning fiction into fact.
I agree with Thomasz S above. Let's actually look at where tourists go and where they spend.

True. You know it's that bad when the Thai Tourism Authority publishes leaflet for Chinese tourists admonishing them to not defecate in public places, or when even the Louvre in Paris has a sign saying the same.

@Asiangaijin, some may accuse me of stereotypes, but mainlander tourists are usually easily distinguished by their clothing styles, glasses styles, and haircuts etc. Taiwanese are more like Japanese style, and I don't know they are Taiwanese until they start speaking Chinese. I haven't been to Singapore so I can't say anything about that, but I doubt that they dress like mainlanders. Maybe the government has pursuaded them to try and make a good impression.

It is important not to underestimate the very positive impact the influx of tourists from China, Korea, Taiwan and other parts of Asia has had on certain local economies in Japan.
I have seen large numbers of families and twenty-somethings visiting the area. They pretty much all seem well mannered overall, and appear to be having a good time as they pour money into the economy. I'm thankful they are here.
The area where I live in Japan has had a very noticeable increase in numbers of these visitors, and it has helped breathe new life into destinations that had previously been languishing, making the area much more exciting and vibrant. The increase in these visitors has also led to somewhat of an economic boom here in terms of new hotel and retail facility construction, renovations of places that had been tired and worn out, and new restaurants and other businesses opening up shop.

I hope Japan can continue to be an island of civility in this increasingly unpleasant world. I know there is this creeping rudeness and impulse and pushy-shovy that Japan has here and there, and I really don't think Japan's big cities are that much better than other big cities in this regard, but I still know a lot of places where people are as ordered and polite and friendly as they were decades ago. If tourism just makes Japan like every other place in the world, the tourists can just keep their "explosive" buying and take it elsewhere.
And honestly, I know everyone has anecdotes about (shudder) Chinese tourists, but I personally have not seen any that are particularly bad. Maybe I just don't hang out in the right places.

Oh puleeez, get real. Taiwan hasn't been part of the Japanese empire for seventy odd years. They still speak Chinese languages (all of which are also spoken across the straits on the Mainland). I've seen many Taiwanese in Japan, and I can tell you, some of the women are as rough as their Shanghainese counterparts. Some of them talk really loud, just like their mainland and HK cousins. And yes, when they're at the airport taking a plane to Taiwan, I think it does mean they're Taiwanese. I certainly remember the Taiwanese couple sitting behind me being extremely noisy. And for those with a bit more knowledge of Mandarin, you can distinguish their accents.
There are many well-behaved Taiwanese just like there are in China or America, but there are ill-mannered ones in every country. Generalizing them, saying they're like Japanese is even worse than saying all mainland Chinese are rude.
