BEIJING: Beijing issued its first-ever red alert for smog on Monday, urging schools to close and invoking restrictions on factories and traffic that will keep half of the city's vehicles off the roads.

北京:北京在星期一发布了第一个重度雾霾红色预警,采取学校停课和限制企业生产及机动车按照单双号限行等措施。

The red alert — the most serious warning on a four-tier system adopted in recent years — was announced late Monday. It means authorities have forecast more than three consecutive days of severe smog.

星期一宣布执行的红色预警是目前所采用的四级预警系统中的最高污染级别警告。专家预计重污染的雾霾天气将持续超过3天。

Before odd/even formula China restricted the sale of vehicles in Beijing i.e. 1 vehicle for a family of 6. Delhi on the other hand has 2-3 vehicles for a family of 4 and there is no restriction on buying any number of vehicles.

Where is public transport? The total fleet of DTC is around 4500 buses, which has actually shrunk nearly 50%. Metro has 8 coaches with an average frequency of 3 min only on 2 lines. Others have only 4 coaches with the frequency of 5 min. Above all these metros do not cover many parts of Delhi-NCR. On the other hand Beijing-China has 25 lines covering almost every part of the City.

Its very very difficult to take on Auto & Petroleum lobby. We all see that in every major city if public transport is improved people are willing to giveup cars/bike. However lobby makes sure public transport remains bare basic, they make sure govt doesn't buy too many buses and keep transport at minimum. Govt earns too much money from taxes on oil imports, that feeds the salary of corer of burocrates and salaries of entire defense system and many of the Govts loss making projects. Unless Govt takes interest and invests into Hydrogen infrastructure Govt cannot earn equal or more amount of money that will help them feed the salaries of corers of Govt employees. Its a complex calculation for us to know. Never the less there is a hope for Govt to earn from Hydrogen fuel pumps and stations equal to oil amount. However these technologies are still 5-8 years away from main stream and infrastructure is further away! We can only hope that Govt will the alternate energy options very seriously and makes its priority. This will help us non dependent on oil and oil nations. This will also us in improving our $ reserves which will bring Rupee up against dollar.

hahaha - nice joke. China has taken such steps long time back. India is only waking up now. They issue only certain number of licenses for cars in Beijing per year, so if you buy one and don't get a license, you don't drive until next year or may be even later. They implemented a few months ago 3-day ban on all vehicles in Beijing to clear the smog.

Yesterday night in Noida, people were bursting firecrackers continuously for 3 hrs from 10 PM to 1 AM coz of marriage or some function. Small children were continuously coughing coz of choking air and one feels helpless. These rich ppl want to burst crackers for marriage/function for show-off in already polluted air.. Morals & common sense just died in NCR!!

The big cities like Delhi or Bejing should be broken down to small city. Small city is the answer. It requires lesser spending by governments too. No city should grow beyond 5 million in population. Business districts should be several. e - office, e - education and E-commerce should be high. Only metro rail, toto battery car, battery car like mahindra reva and electric bike should be allowed within the city.
