During Thursdaynight's federal leaders' debate on the economy, a segment that was supposed tobe about the impact of immigration levels suddenly veered into the Syrianrefugee crisis and whether the current government should be doing more.

As it relates to the Syrian crisis, the UNHCR began seeking space for refugees from that conflict in 2013. They did not ask Canada to take in a certain amount, although according to documents obtained by The Canadian Press, they did ask that Syrians be given the 200 spaces Canada sets aside each year for emergency resettlement.

It is easy for'OFFICIALS' to sit back and say MORE is needed to be done when the TRUE costisn't coming out of their pocket....WE the tax payer will foot the true costsagain....not that we shouldn't help but lets start at home first...I see peoplein my town sleeping in the park where I live ALL the time....or collecting popcans just to eat...why not HELP them out first then do what we can...

Canada and theUSA need to get the hell out of the UN - the UN has absolutely no respect forCanada this has been proven over and over again - all they do is suck billionsof tax payers dollars to pay for their lavish buildings and life styles, the UNhas never done anything to help any country ever, all they have done is makesituations worse.

I don't care ifthe UN asked us to take one million refugees. They don't pay taxes and are a completely irrelevant organization.  Personally, I would like any possiblerefugees vetted strenuously.  Absolutelyno single men, families only.

When did we giveup our sovereignty?  The UN is notelected by or for Canadians.  Is anyonethere elected?  Other than demanding ourtaxpayer dollars they haven't done anything for Canada either.  Mulclair, who has said previously, he will dowhat the UN says Canada should do, is way off base on this one.
