Two American pilots suffered eyeinjuries after Chinese nationals allegedly pointed lasers at their planes nearDjibouti.

The United States has formallycomplained to China after a number of incidents in recent weeks, the Pentagonsaid on Thursday.

The U.S. military has beengrappling with lasers being pointed at aircraft for decades. However, theincidents highlight the concern the United States has about a Chinese militarybase just miles from a critical U.S. base, Camp Lemonnier, in Djibouti.

The U.S. air base is located justsouth of the capital city, while the Chinese naval base is to the west of thecity. They are located about six miles apart

'They are very serious incidents... We have formally démarched the Chinese government and we've requested theChinese investigate these incidents,' Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White toldreporters.

A U.S. official, speaking on thecondition of anonymity, said that in one incident last month two pilots in aC-130 suffered minor eye injuries
