A British explorer attempting to become the first person to make a solo crossing across Antarctica has died from complete organ failure, his family has announced.

Former Army officer Henry Worsley, 55, from Fulham, London, was 71 days in to his attempt to become the first adventurer to cross the continent completely unsupported and unassisted.

Mr Worsley had embarked on his quest last November, aiming to complete explorer British explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton's unfinished attempt of a century ago.

It was reported late last week his body 'shut down' from exhaustion and extreme dehydration after trekking 913 miles.

After spending two days unable to move from his tent, the married father-of-two decide to pull out of the charity adventure and he was airlifted to hospital on Friday with a potentially deadly infection.

The Duke of Cambridge, who was patron of the expedition, expressed his immense sadness at the explorer's death, saying he and Prince Harry had lost a friend.
