Vast crowds of migrant workers surged into Guangzhou’s main railway station hoping to make it back to their family homes ahead of Lunar New Year festivities on 8 February that will usher in the Year of the Monkey.

It is so easy to travel around China 40 weeks a year be informed and learn when and when not to travel in China My only comment it do not drink the water or breath the air Pollution like you have never seen it but what a country and China Rail can teach every train system in the world. is one of the worlds best train systems even with its small problems

It's a good thing the Chinese are generally polite and thoughtful of others' comfort. Can you imagine this sort of crowd elsewhere, on a regular basis? There'd be mass stampedes and fist fights.
Happy Lunar New Year to all who celebrate it.

Can't even begin to imagine the noise, the smell and the lack of personal space it fills me with a morbid dread that people in China live like this. You begin to understand why so many of them immigrate to other countries.

Imaging this: about half million brave souls enduring “ morbid dread” everyday from Tokyo “subway sandwich”.

But a train journey with 1000 Japanese businessmen is more peaceful and stress-free than one with 10 Chinese migrant workers. Not a fair comparison really.

wumogang  TibetanExistence 6h ago
It is absurd to place Japanese businessmen and stress-free in the same sentence.

I too have experienced it and survived. Inevitable in a country experiencing rural migration to the cities on a scale historically unprecedented. But more than that its testimony to the continuing strength of the family in China. Not the western nuclear family but the extended family. Despite urbanisation. Its what I admired most in a country I was lucky enough to spend a few years in.

Given what railway station toilets are like even at the best of times, I am really, really glad that I am not among them.

Happens all the time! Travelling in China over public holidays is total mayhem! I once told the staff in my hostel in Beijing over New Year that I was going to the train station to buy a ticket to another town; they laughed at me and wished me luck. At Beijing Central Train Station there were thousands and thousands of people, everywhere. There are about 80 ticket windows, each for different destinations, and each had a looooooong line before it. All the signage is in Chinese, nobody speaks English, and so I had no idea which window to go to for my ticket. I asked a uniformed man (in Chinese) which window I needed to visit for my destination, and he waved his arms in the air and actually ran away! I joined a randomly chosen line, queued for a few hours, until I arrived at the window where I was finally told which window I was supposed to be at. I went to that window, queued for another couple of hours, only to be told that there were no tickets available until the next week. In China you can't buy a ticket more than 5 days in advance, so that was that. I was able to make other plans; being comparatively wealthy to a migrant worker I bought a plane ticket.

Well things do change a lot now that you can book your ticket online a month in advance, or you can always visit any ticket agents across every city for only 5 rmb.

"All the signage is in Chinese, nobody speaks English, and so I had no idea"
Might have been a good idea to learn a few words before going, eh?

Train tickets have always been available 10 days in advance, not 5. And that's occasionally changed.

Family ties mean very much to Chinese. Celebrating the new year is a stressful duty. Grown-ups have to clean the house, stuff red envelopes with cash, wrap presents and prepare meals for everybody. Millions of migrant workers travel thousands of kilometres just to be able to celebrate the new year with their families in rural areas, whom they see only for a few days once a year. Many can't afford to go home more often and have to save money.
This year it is tough for the travellers, who are left stranded in the rain and snow. The authorities say the rare snow has caught them by surprise, although they should have foreseen the chaos.
