China could lift the World Cup within a decade, former England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson has claimed, as Xi Jinping pushes on with his football revolution.

China's problem is lack of grass roots players, resulting from the lack of facility and reluctance of parents to send their kids to play instead of doing homework. The traditional Communist system of picking little kids for sports schools won't work, for it limits the pool of players at the very beginning.
I would petition Xi to flatten some of the golf courses and convert them into football fields. Dole out some subsidies to local clubs, giving players college admission credits, etc.
Anyway, it will take longer than 10 years if the example of US can be a reference. It has been 20 years since the World Cup in the US and we are still struggling. The problem in the US is the coaching staff and lack of TV commercial support. China will have coaching problems down the road too.
 
中国的问题在于缺少基层球员，因为缺少相关设施并且家长们更想让自己的孩子写作业而不是去玩。传统的中国体育体制下的足球学校招生不会奏效，因为从一开始就限制了运动员储备。

Within 10 years ? It means the guys who will win it are around 14-16 yo now.
If you want to be a champion, at that age you'd already better belong to the best in the world.
And I have more than a doubt concerning the young Chinese football players.
Not even in 25 years. He should have talked about generations. But that become so hypothetical then.
I remember we heard the same things about the US. And before 25 years they have no chance to win it either.
(Eriksson is a clown anyway)

They qualified in 2002 and a lot of people at the time were saying this was the start of the rise of China as a footballing power. 14 years later they haven't even come close to qualifying for another finals and are struggling even to make the final stages of Asian qualifying for 2018.
They are still miles behind their Asian confederation rivals who in tern are miles behind the top teams from Europe & S America. Even given 20 years, their huge population and the new found wealth of their clubs it's still very difficult to see China's national team anywhere near the top of the tree in world football.

中国在2002年进入世界杯，当时很多人都认为这是中国成为足球强国的开始。14年后，他们都无法进入世界杯，现在还挣扎于2018年世界杯亚洲区预算赛中。

Yes, but I would be surprised if the game in China is plagued by the in-fighting, poor discipline, corruption and financial limitations that blights the african national game. Which to my mind has, with depressing regularlity, hampered any real progress in the WC.

Corruption? China is one of the most corrupt places around. Financial limitations, no. In the near future they should certainly avoid that problem.

China has long had a massive problem with corruption in football. A few years ago they jailed a whole bunch of refs and coaches for taking cash for match fixing.
