Snails smallenough to fit almost 10 times into the eye of a needle have been discovered inGuangxi province, Southern China.

在中国广西省发现了非常小的蜗牛，需要有10只这样的蜗牛才能挤满一个针眼。

With theirshells measuring 0.86mm in height, the researchers believe they are thesmallest land snails ever found.

蜗牛壳的高度为0.86毫米，研究人员认为它们是目前已知的世界最小陆生蜗牛。

The Angustopiladominikae snail – named after the wife of one of the authors ofthe study published inthe journal ZooKeys – is just visible to the naked eye but verydifficult to spot.

这种 Angustopila dominikae蜗牛——以在ZooKeys杂志上发表这篇论文的作者之一的妻子命名——刚刚好能被肉眼看到，但是非常难认出。



BarnaPáll-Gergely, co-author and scientist fromShinshu university in Japan said he was excited to find the “really reallytiny” snails.

来自日本信州大学的合作者兼科学家Barna Páll-Gergely称找到这么小的蜗牛让他感到非常激动。

“These are veryprobably extreme endemic species. If we find them in more than one localitythat is somewhat surprising,” he said.

“这些蜗牛可能是非常特有的种类。如果我们在多个地方发现它们，那就有点让人感到惊讶了，”他说。

The sevenspecies of record-breaking “microsnails” were discovered by the researcherswhile collecting soil samples from the base of limestone rocks in Guangxiprovince. They say it is likely they are indigenous to the area, with the mostsimilar species living about 621 miles away in Thailand.

科学家在广西省的石灰岩上搜集土壤样本时发现了这些破纪录的“微型蜗牛”，总共有7个种类。科学家称这种蜗牛可能只存在于这个地方，类似的物种生活在621英里外的泰国。

This is such amiraculous discovery. And I love the keyhole entry/exit to the shell. Such atiny tiny Thing and so delicately formed.
I wonder if theevolutionary reason is simply that many potential predators do not registerthem?

Why would theydo that? ARe you suggesting that the Chinese in China kill everything aroundthem and eat it? If they did, how did they manage to survive as a civilizationfor several thousand years even before people in Britain got upgraded by theRoman Empire?
Seen anyhedgehogs lately in Britain? They aren't very many, and not because anybodyeats them any more, but because they get run over by cars, or because thefields are so dead with herbicides and pesticides that they cannot findcaterpillars and earthworms to ext.
