When it happens elsewhere – and particularly when it underscores the perils and pitfalls of democracy – it becomes front-page news.
Such is the case of Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump, who, for China’s authoritarian rulers, has become the latest example of how allowing the masses a say in choosing their leaders is a bad idea.

“The rise of a racist in the US political area worries the whole world,” the party-controlled Global Times crowed this week ahead of of Trump’s victory in the latest round of primaries. “He has even been called another Benito Mussolini or Adolf Hitler by some western media.”
It added, darkly: “Mussolini and Hitler came to power through elections, a heavy lesson for western democracy.”
Trump, or “Chuanpu” as they call him in China, has been a gift to Communist party spin doctors paid to convince the country’s 1.4 billion citizens that rule of the people is a sure path to chaos and destruction.

I am not sure that is exactly what the Chinese government said.
Totally ignoring Chinese sentiment on the concept of voting in a government, I have been thinking for awhile now that we are more focused on democracy than on freedom and in fact tend to use the words interchangeably.
You can have democracy but not freedom. Should Corbyn or Trump get elected, you will know what I mean.
The last 50 years have seen the shackles our forebears have put on government been eroded and finally broken to the situation we have now where government/politicians are able to interfere/shape our individual lives in a way that George III would never have considered.
Corporatism is now the bedfellow of big government, which is curtailing individual freedom and liberty more and more.
The freedom to succeed (and fail) on one's own merit is to me more important than democracy.

We need to shift the conversation away from 'the problem with democracy' to 'the problem with corporations buying election campaigns'.
The US is a failed democracy- the President of the States is a puppet for the corporates. Until the people reclaim the political process, we are going to see these idiots rise.
Besides, let's be honest, the US is a military state (which it has exported around the world) with it's people living under surveillance by the state.

Protectionism could be very interesting for the US. It's quite a difficult position for Clinton to argue against - not least because the return of American manufacturing will be largely automated and far more environmentally friendly. Trump gets to sound like he's pro-blue collar jobs when that's not what he's talking about at all.

China's leaders are not the only ones wanting to laugh at the joke that it American democracy and the caliber of the super-rich conservative maniacs that seek to be the next POTUS. But what is happening now in America is no joke - it is a democratic disaster which, if not stopped in its tracks, will escalate into a global tragedy of hate, fear and conflict.
Whatever the deficiencies in the American democratic system, electing Trump will create far worse problems, both inside and outside the borders of the USA.
Just don't do it - elect Donald Duck or Goofy as POTUS, but not Donald Trump!

For lessons to be learned from history.....See Boris Yeltsin....
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boris_Yeltsin
Much of the Yeltsin era was marked by widespread corruption, and as a result of persistent low oil and commodity prices during the 1990s, Russia suffered inflation, economic collapse and enormous political and social problems that affected Russia and the other former states of the USSR.
Will America go the same way, one wonders, when one sees some Presidential candidates....
