Fast radio bursts: Scientists hear ‘huge’,mysterious and repeating signal from deep in space

Astronomersaren’t sure what is causing the mysterious sounds, only 17 of which have everbeen heard

Scientists have heard a long, repeatedsound from deep in space — and nobody is sure where it is coming from.

Astronomers found 10 millisecond-long“fast radio bursts”, the latest example of a mysterious radio wave coming fromoutside of our galaxy.

Scientists had previously thought thatthe bursts were singular events. But a new study finds that at least some ofthe sources send out repeated messages.

The finding adds to other strangediscoveries about the fast radio bursts that seem to indicate that there may besomething unusual causing them. Scientists said last year that some of themessages appear to be coming in a pattern — one that could even be created byalien technology.

The new research sheds little new lighton what exactly is causing the messages. But it does offer perplexing questionsabout what sort of source could be emitting them.

“"We're showing that whateverbattery drives FRBs, it can recharge in minutes," said James Cordes, anastronomy professor at Cornell University, in astatement.

"The energy of the event becomesvery problematic. We're detecting these FRBs from very far away, which meansthat they are intrinsically very bright. Only a few astrophysical sources canproduce bursts like this, and we think they are most likely neutron stars inother galaxies."

Previously, scientists had thought thatmessage was coming from something like the collision of neutron stars, sendinga shockwave of energy across the universe. But the new findings show that thesource of the energy isn’t being destroyed, since they send out more than oneburst.

"In our paper, we're showing thatour FRB can't have an explosive origin,” said Shami Chatterjee, a senior researcher at Cornell, in a statement. “So, either there's an oddcoincidence, or maybe there are different types of FRBs.

“Either way, it seems we've broken thisenigmatic phenomenon wide open."

You just know it's the signature tune of The Archers from another constellation.  Probably Sagittarius.

The *nearest* galaxy to our own, Andromeda, is 2.5 million light years away.  So I'm not going to worry yet.

Forget the nearest galaxy, the nearest star is only 4.2 light years away and if there is an advanced life there, it won;t take much time for them to find us ;)

As the article makes clear, the "noise" is probably caused by a neutron star in another galaxy.
If it was that close in our own galaxy, we'd know about it!  (Possibly only for the next few milliseconds).

Strange, very strange...maybe it was this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOP-FQLf0Cs
Remember that any reply will take light years to get back to the source, if indeed we are dealing with aliens...

If the signals were of 'intelligent' origin then the vast distances involved means that they're all dead now.

The last time they heard some promising alien noises at 9 am and 12 noon  it turned out to be interference by the microwave oven heating up the scientists pies. I hope they've checked better this time.

They should just get one of those mini tabletop ovens so the pies come out nice and crispy like a good pie should!
Besides, ET doesn't want soggy pies.
