Chinese investment in the US has increased rapidly to more than $15bn, according to the National Committee on US-China Relations. The new record, set at the same time economic growth in China slowed to a 25-year low of 6.9%, is likely to be beaten again in 2016 according to the report.

My guess is they realized that they cannot ship finished goods to the US forever. Someday, they would have to produce here, like the Japanese did. It is a good thing for the US. When it comes to investment, it is about buy low and sell high on a global scale. A lot of US businesses have growth opportunities in China that are not visible to their current US owners. Therefore their valuation looks low to the Chinese. In a sense, China bashing is very good to the Chinese investors.

Reactionary ag states in the Rockies area sit around congratulating one another about selling ag product to China. However, our recycling industry has hit a wall because the main buyers of plastic recycling were Chinese. That's gone now. Our recyclers are storing it hoping the Chinese market will return. What else could they do with it? 
Rock and a hard place time. 
TPP should never be passed. It takes away market behavior in favor of corporate control.

Can US investors invest in China? Can US businesses enter the Chinese economy? As far as I'm aware, the answer in both cases is tilted towards NO. Some investors and businesses can enter the Chinese economy but they're extremely hamstrung and cannot openly flaunt, much less engage in, their lust for subverting the USA from within (As an example of the last, when a Chinese investor acquired Legendary Studio, he openly '“American movie companies have the commanding heights of the movie industry in the world. (This acquisition will) change this situation”.') I don't normally go for such simplistic demands but I honestly wish the next US President will nationalize all these assets and kick the Chinese out.

Interesting case you make. There is however a huge difference between Japan's example and China. Japan has a closeted domestic market stagnating, no room for consumer growth as they will never embrace immigration. China still has 500 million slack to join the consumer and modern employment market. Their consumption has just reached 50% and can grow to the norm of 70%. Japan could only stagnate if it refused immigration as the people simply refuse to grow the population. China likewise will not grow the population, but they don't need to with that 500 million spare capacity.

If you were around in the 80's, you should remember all the doom and gloom being spouted about the Japanese buying huge amounts of assets and property in the US. Of course, like the Guardian, the media took this to be a sign of strength on behalf of the Japanese but in reality it was harbinger of enormous economic turmoil inside the Japanese economy (the insiders knew about the problems they had). If China is such a great investment that anyone would be a fool not to buy into it, why are the Chinese not buying there, why are they buying assets and property in New York, Miami, and California? When the rich send their kids to US universities (i.e. Xi Jinping) and buy property in San Francisco, you know there's an issue.
