As summer approaches, police in Tehran have once again begun to crack down on Iranians who fail to comply with the country’s Islamic dress code. This year, besides the customary uniformed morality police, 7,000 undercover agents are reportedly also on the case. I was spared the early years of the Islamic Republic, but my mother recalls how diligent she had to be to avoid giving the morality police – or anyone else with the authority to judge appearances – any pretext to find fault with her, as jail sentences for “protesting” were all too common for dress-code transgressors.

It was a hot day in the early 1980s and my parents were going to an international exhibition in Tehran. As my older sister, then a baby, lay in her carriage, my mom wheeled her into the room filled with female agents who were in charge of checking the women’s compliance. They would ask some to fix their hijab, passing tissues to others to wipe off their makeup. As one agent finished scrutinizing my mother, she looked at my sister in the carriage.

“Khanoum!” – “lady” – she exclaimed. “Why are your daughter’s bare legs showing?” she asked, in apparent shock.

“She’s just eight months old,” my mother, in even greater shock, replied.

“So what? She’s a girl, isn’t she?”

My mom covered my sister’s legs with a blanket. Back then, nobody would argue further. People were scared.

As time went by, the younger generation gradually became accustomed to the morality police, then known as komiteh. Just one encounter with them, and the spell of dread was broken. You were not scared of them any more. At least those in my circle were not.

The British politically correct progressives don't care about the way you dress but they would probably love to have a morality police to monitor the way you think.

Yes, because there are thousands of telepaths just waiting for us to gain power so that they can have a job. You people really are tedious: being polite is not 'politically correct', it's just displaying good manners.

I support the "good manners" part of PC, but what are the aims of "safe spaces", "cultural appropriation ", etc, etc, if not not to stifle opinion and dissent?

Because it represents the misogynistic fantasy of men to control women and alleviate their pathetic fears of sexual failure by making the women ashamed and afraid to walk about as nature intended and using religious authority to call it sacred and enforce it?

Ironic then that feminist activists refuse to support the women being oppressed by this patriarchal, fascist ideology.

I think the problem is many want to ban the wearing of it, whilst not as bad as forcing someone to wear it, making someone not wear something is just as bad. It is up to that person.

I think it's pretty clear that anyone who joins the 'morality police' is a pathetic, slightly sad, wholly joyless individual. I feel sorry for them.

No they are just taking advantage of the fact that they have a penis. Which in Iranian society gives them power over all women. They are tools.

Well at least you don't need to carry your birth certificate to prove your sex before going to the bathroom.....
Unlike Alabama where you better be sure you can prove your sec at birth before taking a pee in a public bathroom

Hopefully soon this and other of the numerous unpleasant Islamic traditions will be consigned to history so that Muslims both male and female can be respected and prosper.

SirTalbotBuxomly  TobyTEAPOT 16h ago
I'm afraid 'soon' is wishful thinking as Islam seems pretty much incapable of modernising. Much better if people could simply stop believing in supernatural deities full stop, not that this is well received by this particular religion.

I watched a program following an ultra Orthodox Jewish community in Australia. They have many of the same customs. Women must wear loose fitting, 'modest' clothing. No trousers at all and they wear a hair covering. Their education is limited to domestic affairs. They have arranged marriages only. It is a fundamental requirement to have many children. Some in the community had over a dozen!
It was an eye opener. I had no idea.

I used to go out with an Iranian woman, at least she polite and used to do the gardening regularly. Yes they are smart with or without the scarf, what I was pointing out in the first place is others complain about them wearing a scarf and never mention the UK hoodies as such. The only reason I didn't marry her was due to me and her already been married in the first place.

The Quran says that it would be best for a woman to wear a scarf of some kind to cover themselves when going to the market as there are a lot of bad men there. From this the Muslims have blown it right out of proportion.

It's not. It mentions women's 'zeenah' meaning charms and beauty and to not expose it. It is interpretation to call zeenah hair and require a veil. One line does say to cover your zeenah when out, lower your gaze. Which is why different countries have different degrees of interpretation. But no reason whatsoever why they can't be Muslims and have no veil.

In Saudi Arabia the metowa (amateur morality enforcement squads) roam the streets beating and whipping women whose covering garments are too short - show ankles or legs. It's all fun and games until they toss you in jail and do forced "gynecological exams."
