NAHA —The U.S. military in Okinawa is prohibiting service members living on its bases in the southern island prefecture from drinking alcohol off base for around four weeks from Friday military officials said.

The move comes amid calls for greater discipline among U.S. service members and other personnel lixed to U.S. bases after Kenneth Franklin Shinzato a former Marine and a worker at the U.S. Air Force’s Kadena Air Base was arrested last week on suspicion of dumping the body of a local woman.

The U.S. military is also encouraging workers on its bases in Okinawa to adhere to the ban effective until June 24 which the military has termed a “period of unity and mourning.”

Under the policy those living off base can drink alcohol only while they are on base or inside their homes。

Silliness. How will banning it for only 4 weeks help?

Why just Okinawa? Is it only Okinawa based US military members who commit crimes?

Although it is easy to understand the need for action to relieve Okinawan citizens of some stress this does not seem the appropriate means of action.

This will reduce the presence of obnoxious drunks but this doesn't help much with any rape or murder statistics.

The most dangerous predators are not those who drink but those who are sober and will persue their evil with sober intelligence. These are the individuals that will premeditate a homicide and will avoid detection.

So can this "ban" prevent a crime?

Probably and most definitely not.

Curfew would be a better option in my opinion.

Well that ain't gonna stop Captain Upchuck from drowning in it! Just move the base to a secluded island and keep the dogs away from civilization.

OUCH! But very admirable.

How many times seriously do we see the US taking the high road in matters like this? I think it is an excellent chance to suck it up hold your head up and show the world that you are better than they are America. Wouldn't it be wonderful if US armed forces were really thought of as officers and gentlemen? That is what they are right? Time to prove it.

Alcohol is a poison and a highly addictive substance. It affects health and performance on and off the job. It obviously leads to criminal activity in many cases. Will banning alcohol "prevent" crimes? It will prevent some. It might prevent a lot of crime. And hey if you need your drug stay on base. easy peasy.

We all should consider the heavy social costs of alcohol. Maybe local bars should go to the Okinawa government and explain to everyone how their drug delivery business justifies all the stuff US personnel get blamed for. And make sure to sell tickets to that meeting because it is sure to be a doozy.

If I were a general or lieutenant I would have my squad go up to the locals and apologize for the actions of a marine. I would then have them help out the locals by assisting in labor. Lastly I will inform the men myself about respecting the rights of the Japanese citizen acting with dignity to represent your country and any marine who is caught breaking the law will be severely scrutinized and their whole squad will pay the price.

I m serious when it comes to military personnel attacking harmless civilians.

I think that a lot of people are missing the point here that this is collective punishment. It's for all the group to realize that misbehavior on their own parts will result in punishment for the rest of the group. Right or wrong it's how the military (and Japan for that matter) often act.

I doubt this would do much especially seeing as it's only for 4 weeks. No doubt there are other mentally unstable in the base and I think they would have no problem waiting out the 4 weeks before they can go out on the hunt again. Might be an idea to create an armed Okinawa citizen militia to keep these anti-socials in check.

The man who committed the crime wasn't a service member but a civilian worker. Banning service members from doing something because someone who wasn't a service worker committed a crime doesn't make that much sense does it? Any civilian base worker (who is not subject to military law) can go out and have a few drinks tonight.
