Barack Obama has said Washington supports Vietnam’s territorial claims against Beijing in the South China Sea and promised it greater access to security equipment.

奥巴马说华盛顿支持越南向北京提出的南中国海领土主张，并承诺提供防卫支持。

“In the South China Sea the US is not a claimant in current disputes but we will stand with our partners in upholding key principles like freedom of navigation” the US president said in a speech in Hanoi.

Pity you could not avoid personal slurs and stick to the issue. On May 13 U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense David Shear said this to the Senate Foreign relations Committee: “Vietnam has 48 outposts; the Philippines 8; China 8; Malaysia 5 and Taiwan 1.” I guess when you have no argument then personal attacks are needed to pad out any response.

China's aggression in the East Sea is disturbing. Vietnam and the Philippines simply don't have enough strength alone to oppose Chinese expansionism. Help by the U.S. to maintain neutrality in these waters is critically important.

That was a completely different administration with completely different aims. Much as I loathe ad hominem responses it is rather like saying given the way the UK so resolutely fucked up both the Middle East (Sykes Picot) and South Asia (partition) that you'd not be sure if historians will laugh at the absurdity or cry in anguish at the lunacy of the UK government ever setting foot let alone begging for commerce in either of those regions. Still it must make you feel better.

The United States is INVITED and welcomed by Vietnam. Last year Vietnam INVITED and welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping who became the first foreign leader to address the Vietnamese Parliament. Why is it that the US always considers it is the first when it has been done before? Who invited the US Navy into the South Chinese Sea? and the Taiwan Strait? and the East China Sea? and the Yellow Sea?
