BRITAIN has been given a ￡400m boost by Belgium’s decision to purchase 34 new F35 fighter jets. While the new planes are mainly built by US defence giant Lockheed Martin the UK - its only 'tier one' partner - has a 15 per cent stake in every aircraft sold.

Britain’s has already bought 48 F35Bs - the more expensive vertical-take-off-and-landing variant – for its new aircraft carriers and they are currently undergoing trials on GMS Queen Elizabeth in the US.
Another 90 of the cheaper A variant are planned.

Lockheed Martin spokesman Robert Gage said: “The value of the F-35 is unmatched. From a capability perspective it is a generational leap ahead of legacy aircraft.
"And now that we’ve reduced the unit cost so significantly, it delivers significantly more capability at the same or less cost than its rivals.
"All this, while also providing tremendous industrial opportunities to both the US and UK for a very long and significant production run.”
