A village in China has hit the spotlight after it was revealed that a high number of its residents are twins. 

中国的一个村庄被曝光有大量的村民是双胞胎后成为人们的焦点。

Qingyuan a rural village in mountainous Chongqing has only 367 households but 39 pairs of twins reports the People's Daily Online. 

据人民网报道，青堰村—重庆的一个山村，只有367户人家其中却有39对双胞胎。

Over time Qingyuan has become known as twin village with the local primary school containing a set of twins in almost every class. 

长期以来，青堰村就是作为双胞胎村而闻名，当地的小学几乎每个班上都有一对双胞胎。

The oldest set of twins in the village are 89 years old. 

村里年纪最大的一对双胞胎已经89岁了。

Twins are such a phenomenon that even the village's chickens are reportedly laying double yolk eggs.

However the locals remain baffled as to why so many of their families have twins according to a previous report on People's Daily Online in May.

Is it really a mystery? It's a remote community therefore the marriage opportunities are limited which results in marriages between relatives (distant or close) therefore the twin gene would be common in the population of the area.

How lovely for them to have a lifelong friend to share everything with. Coming home from a Twins club mums (much needed) night out I was the only parent of twins in the taxi that was not a twin. The other 3 passengers and even the driver were parents of twins and a twin themselves. One of them even has twin sisters too! As for identical twins being non-hereditary I know 3 families each with 2 sets of identical twins and another family where 3 siblings each have a set of identical twins. Double blessings all around!

Could this be caused by air pollution in China & India? I thought about this except that you'd expect to see many more deformities or genetic disorders commonly related to heavy metals. It could just be coincidence too.
