The Turkish government has cancelled the passports of around 50000 people to prevent them leaving the country as a crackdown continues following a failed coup.

Efkan Ala the interior minister said more than 18000 have so far been detained over the attempt to oust President Tayyip Erdogan while thousands of government staff are under investigation.

What is very obvious is the West's sadness at the failure of the military coup against a democratically elected government even while feigning "concern". In Erdogan's words "mind your own business" Turkey doesn't need your fake sympathy. The infrastructure that supports the coup will be dismantled and Gulen's protectors in Washington need to review their diplomatic relationship with Ankara. As for the EU I guess Turkey doesn't want to join a unx that is headed towards chaos.

The thought that Turkey might join the European unx was always impractical and fortunately vanishingly distant it's now totally ridiculous. The likelihood of some sort of skirmish or limited war with Greece increases and Erdogan is behaving ever more like the man I most compare him to the late unlamented Nicolai Ceausescu of Romania.

12 hours after the so called coup Erdogan had lists of thousands of people to sack to arrest to blame fo participation in the rebellion .  
This alone convince me that the coup was staged by himself.

He didn't release anyone he just dropped lawsuits against people who criticised him. When you understand that to attract a lawsuit from this thin-skinned over-sensitive madman all you had to do was post something on Facebook you realise his gesture was meaningless.
