Tsai Ing-wen is new to the job and the strain is beginning to show. Elected president of Taiwan in a landslide victory she took office in May buoyed by high approval ratings. Yet in a few short months Tsai's popularity has plunged by 25%. The reason may be summed up in one word: China. Suspicious that Tsai's Democratic Progressive party which also won control of parliament harbours a pro-independence agenda Beijing suspended official and back-channel talks with its “renegade province” and shut down an emergency hotline.

Tsai faces contradictory pressures. The public wants the benefit of closer economic ties with China but Beijing's intentions are rightly distrusted by a population that increasingly identifies itself as Taiwanese not Chinese. Given President Xi Jinping's ominous warnings that reunification cannot be delayed indefinitely China's military build-up and hawkish suggestions that Beijing may resort to force Taiwanese ambivalence is wholly understandable.

But the answers proffered by national leaders are different and sometimes sharply at odds.

The China dilemma is felt strongly in Washington. The US has striven in recent years to strengthen Asian alliances increase trade and raise its regional military profile – Barack Obama's so-called rebalance or pivot to Asia – in a bid to contain and channel China's ambitions peacefully. But analysts say the pivot appears to be in trouble. For Europeans fixated on Syria and immigration this may not seem especially worrying or relevant. That's shortsighted. If Obama and future US presidents get China wrong the resulting damage could be global threatening the security and prosperity of all.

Looking to the US to box China in or stop its aggressive policies is unrealistic. It must be the combination of nations in the area working together to stop the Chinese. The US can help but it is the nations most directly affected that must take action. One good thing is the Japanese are finally getting over the "constitutional" thing and are acknowledging that they are going to have to much more responsible for their own security in the future. SE Asian nations working for stronger ties with India is also good.

We the consumer have the ultimate power in society - if only we used it collectively. We can still stop the rise by voting with our wallets.

Those blaming Obama most stridently for not keping China in its box are those most responsible for China's rise. American and Western companies shafted their own people to make themselves more profit. They didn't care what the consequences might be as long as the lmighty "Shareholder Value" continued to rise. Now they demand that the taxes from all those people whose jobs they let go be used to contain the new superpower that they created. As usual Coroporate America messes things up then demands to know what someone else is going to do about it

All very true -- I would add to that by saying we the consumer are at least partly culpable. We(western populations) bought those products that our companies 'made in china'.
We all turned a blind eye as long as our shopping carts were filled with ever cheaper items.

Were the US to form a cooperative instead of confrontational relationship with China the world would be a better place. The same could be said for the US relationship with Russia.
Of course the military-industrial-banking-congressional complex that governs Washington's behavior would not be happy. WIthout confrontation the arms industries can't sell their weapons of war banks' profits take a hit and congress critters don't get their kickbacks err "donations".

The US ought to close its military bases abroad and let industrialized nations provide for their own security. If any single country poses an existential threat to the US e.g. N. Korea then it has the right and obligation to protect its citizens and use all means available to effectively destroy that specific nation's capability to wage war. ISIS? Replace oil as a primary fuel source worldwide and ISIS will whither from lack of funding along with any interest the US may have in maintaining a military presence in the mid-East.
