My advice for David Cameron – treat XiJinping’s promises with caution
When Xi Jinping, the president of China, makes his statevisitto the UK this week, he will bring a message of forgiveness –for Britain’s now forsworn attempts to “interfere with China’s internalaffairs” such ashumanrights and Tibet –and hope.
President Xi will offer David Cameron life-savinginvestment in the British economy and an increasing share of the emergingChinese domestic market for Britain’s exports. The Chinese delegation isexpected to sign off on a multimillion-pound investment in Hinkley Point nuclear power station, and a number of otherinfrastructure projects. The images of Xi being honoured by the Queen, whenthey are broadcast in China, will bring a massive boost to the sale of Britishgoods to the imminent Chinese “consumer-led” economy. In a nutshell, PresidentXi Jinping is going to rescue Britain.
The Chinese government once offered torescue me too. It was about 10 years ago, in China, when I ran a media businessworth $4m a year in sales. I published print magazines and websites.
All media in China is controlled by theCommunist party, via the State Council Information Office. After seven years ofpolitical and commercial battles, during which I was obliged to work withvarious levels of government and the party, an official from the InformationOffice told me my troubles were over. His precise words were: “Mark, now thatyou are working with us, you have nothing to fear. Everything will be fine.”
The Information Office proceeded to subvertmy brand and disrupt my business. We had a dispute, which ended in the Beijingcourt of appeal. In the final hearing, a provincial government official I hadworked with for many years took the stand and read out a letter he hadreceived. It was signed, and it was from the man who told me I had nothing tofear.
“You are to createa back-dated document so we can secure the rights to the trademark,” it said, and concluded: “It is your duty to help us teach this foreigner a lesson.”
My lawyer was summoned to court to collectthe decision, which we had been told was in our favour. He never made it. Stuckin traffic, he took a call on his mobile. “The decision has been cancelled.”
He called the judge. “It is impossible forme to discuss this,” she said, and hung up.
The government official who had told me Ihad nothing to fear took my business and my trademark, and went on to destroymy career. He made it impossible for me to work in the media in China.
When I tell this story, the standardreaction is: things have changed for the better; that would never happen inChina today. And now: “Xi Jinping is going to make reforms that will liberatethe Chinese market and economy, so everything will be all right.”
They are incorrect. The commercialenvironment in China, especially for foreign companies, but also domestic ones, has worsened. Ask a member of any foreign chamber of commerce there. Xi has notimplemented reforms. He has clamped down on political dissent, and where he hasattempted to solve economic problems, he has been at best cack-handed.

Obviously a gap in the market to be fillednow that Gadaffi has gone

More cooperation is always a good thing ...not sure about the nuclear deal though

You did well getting out of China business, they don't deserve it. You can work from Taiwan or Hong Kong

This move to embrace China appearsdesperate and ill-conceived. Little consultation appears to have been soughtand despite assurances that this is purely a commercial partnership, I'mguessing that Cameron won't be meeting the Dalai Lama anytime soon. Also, isn'tit a little risky to give China control over a number of our Nuclear Powerstations?
I'm so wary of this move by Osbourne and Iwould have welcomed a PM who could have stood up to him.

- Or what. The article clearly outlines therisks in believing that China will not to see this partnership purely from theperspective of self-interest.

Steel is a strategic material.
The Tories claim they cannot protect steelwith anti dumping tariffs because that would not be free trade. A ridiculousjustification, the Chinese don't have a market economy, they have a commandeconomy.
All the talk about security and we allowChina to take out our ability to defend ourselves. No steel, no military, nodefence. The US believes in free trade yet protects all strategic industriesincluding, oil, steel even telecoms.
The constituency that counts - the(international) Banks.

Anyone who is not for democracy is fortheir own power, and trusting them to be anything else is foolish.

How many bears were killed for those stupidhats, will someone tell me? This is disgrace, UK...

The Tories know it is a bad deal for the UKto give away strategic industries but have been offered favours for the bankingsector, which is the Tory constituency.Perhaps more important, the Tory partyprefers Chinese National Socialism to our system, no strikes, no NHS, noUnions, no free speech, mass surveillance, unfettered billionaires.
The Tories are working on all of the above.

Has Dave asked Xi to promise the Chinesewon't insert "backdoor" code into the nuclear power station controlsystems? If I were a Chinese agent, I'd quite like access to a large, radioactive potential weapon on the British mainland.
Perhaps Dave doesn't know much aboutcomputers. Has anybody suggested to him that foreign governments can't alwaysbe trusted with uranium based in Britain.
