英国海军45型驱逐舰邓肯号在演习中失去动力 [英国媒体]

A ￡1BILLION warship has limped back to port after another engine problem, the Royal Navy admitted yesterday.

Type 45 destroyer HMS Duncan returned to Devonport on half-power two days after setting off on a Nato exercise in the Channel.

It is the newest of the six Type 45s and sailed on its maiden deployment 20 months ago.

The embarrassing return to port is just the latest setback for the state-of-the-art destroyer fleet which has been plagued with engine problems.

All six Type 45s are to be given new diesel generators at a cost of an estimated ￡1billion because the current system struggles in hot temperatures.

Earlier this week the Commons Defence Select Committee warned that British defences have been put at risk by our “woefully low” number of frigates and destroyers.

It said the escort fleet has been slashed from 35 frigates and destroyers in 1998 to just 19.
