Taiwan’s president is planning to meet members of Congress next monthduring a stopover visit to the US that will go ahead despite strong Chinesegovernment objections, a senior Taiwanese official has said.

据台湾高级官员披露，台湾地区领导人蔡英不顾中国大陆的强烈反对，仍坚持在下个月过境美国期间与美国国会议员进行会面。

The visit has caused speculation in Washington and Taiwan thatTsai may meet Trump in person, or members of his transition team, during anine-day trip that begins on 7 January and includes brief state visits toHonduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador.

蔡英文将在1月7号开始对洪都拉斯、尼加拉瓜、危地马拉和萨尔维多进行短暂访问，共计9天。美国和台湾方面猜疑其将同川普或川普团队成员进行私人会面。

Taiwan’s foreign ministry was seeking to arrange for Tsai to meet membersof the US Senate and House of Representatives. The exact locations of themeetings, and the duration of the stopover, have yet to be announced. Trump’stransition HQ is in New York.

台湾外交部门正在安排蔡英文同美国众议院和参议院代表进行会面，但并未公布具体的见面地点和停留时间。值得注意的是，川普的过渡团队总部在纽约。

Alex Huang, spokesman for Taiwan’s presidential office, denied that theplanning or disclosure of the transit stops were being delayed due to pressurefrom China. “There is no problem of that kind,” Huang said.

But China this week reiterated its strong objection to Tsai and her90-strong government delegation touching down on US soil, claiming thatallowing her to do so would “send wrong signals to Taiwan independence forces”.

中国大陆在本周重申反对蔡英文及其90名随行人员过境美国，并声明此举将会对台独势力提供错误的信号。

Tsai appealed for unity this week at a closed-doors meeting of her rulingDPP. “At a time of change, national solidarity across party lines isincreasingly needed to fight against foreign forces,” a party spokesman, YangChia-liang, quoted Tsai as saying. “China has neverstopped suppressing Taiwan’s international participation and diplomaticefforts.”

本周，蔡英文在民进党内部会议中呼吁团结。民进党发言人引用蔡英文讲话说道：在这个多变的时刻，我们越来越需要跨党派的民族团结来抵抗外国势力，中国从未停止过对台湾国际和外交空间的打压。
