Mikel John Obi has become the latest Chelsea player to head to the Chinese Super League after announcing he is joining Tianjin Teda.

After Oscar recently departed Stamford Bridge to sign for Shanghai SIPG, Mikel revealed on Twitter he was heading in the same direction following a 10-year stay at Chelsea.

The midfielder has failed to break into the Chelsea side under Antonio Conte this season. Mikel said in a statement: “As you will know, I haven’t featured as much this season as I would have liked, and at 29 I still have many years in the game ahead of me.

Mikel won 11 trophies with Chelsea during a spell at the club which consisted of 374 appearances.

And has to depart to China. "Challenge" only ever seems to be used by footballers as a euphemism for bucketloads of cash. Was a decent player and has won his fair share of trophies, so good luck to him.

Playing in China is going to be far more of a challenge than playing in some mid table team in Belgium or warming the bench.

Cult hero. He's only of three players to have played every minute of Benfica, Barcelona and Bayern in the 2012 Champions League campaign. This leaves only Luiz, Cahill and Terry from that CL win.
This is the sort of transfer you'd expect to happen, he's won almost everything there is to win in club football unlike Oscar or Alex Teixeira. Good luck to him.

He's only 29? God it feels like he's been there forever. Appreciative of his efforts in the Champions League final. He was always a relatively safe pair of hands, even if he never became the complete midfielder that many had hoped.

Thanks for everything Mikel John Obi. Not the most glamorous player, but a sometimes vital cog. Tens years spent as a loyal servant to Chelsea and won everything there is to win.
