Founded by the Russians Dalian boasts a wealth of architectural history. But now its treasured buildings are marked for demolition – and the government is being sued. One student went to capture the area before it disappears

Sitting on the Liaodong Peninsula in north-east China the second-tier city of Dalian has a complex history. Transformed in 1898 from a small fishing village into a major port city under Russian rule Dalian passed into Japanese hands in the 1930s before falling under Soviet control after the second world war. In 1950 the USSR handed the city over to the Chinese government.

Dalian’s cityscape reflects this history with Japanese and Russian architecture surrounded by gleaming new commercial skyscrapers. One of the most famous examples is Russian Street originally called Engineer Street.

The oldest street in Dalian it boasts buildings built by the Russians in the early 20th century. By the mid-1990s many had fallen into disrepair and city mayor at the time Bo Xilai decided to carefully renovate the remaining structures adding new ones built in a similar style. He also renamed it Russian Street.

I wouldn't call every Russian style building a "heritage" . For one they are only a hundred years old. And not every building is magnificent and architecturally significant. Judging from the pictures the buildings to be demolished are rather ordinary and not all that efficient to use in a crowded city. In Dalian's city center there are many well preserved Russian architectures.

Lets face it. You can't make a tower block architecturally interesting. It's a tower and it's block shaped

It's such a pity we are seeing the destruction of historical buildings which with a little bit of imagination could be streets with international restaurants clubs and entertainment outlets and an entertainment sector of the city. Singapore did very well converting their old water front colonial buildings into an entertainment hub and preserving these old buildings for generations to appreciate.

Dalian is a bit of a conundrum. The Russian enclave is located bang in the middle of the business district but is mainly home to tourist rip off shops and unfortunately there has been no concerted effort to bring the buildings up to standard. Sadly when you get to the far end of the pedestrian area you find yourself in a ghost town. I doubt very much that there is any chance of protecting the actual buildings but the likelihood is that they will be developed into something much more glitzy in much the same style. Dalian is the top North East China tourist destination but recent developments such as a 9km long mega bridge that now completely blocks in what was originally the top seaside spot in the city leaves you wondering where they will go next. Last year it was even muted to me that they were planning a 200km bridge from Dalian to Yantai on the Shandong peninsular. Like many Chinese cities Dalian is now unrecognizable from what it must have looked like 20 years ago the most recent casualty having been the Japanese district. Dalian was actually the first place the Japanese set foot in China prior to their wholesale occupation and apparently there were historical reasons for the demolition the layout of the district from the air reading 大日本 or Japan is Great! Welcome to the People's Republic everybody.

No surprise. The Chinese have been in a fetish of knocking down everything belonging to previous eras for over 2 millennia. They believe that previous era = backwards or in some cases shame.

No serious city is complete without its own Trump Tower. If a few historic buildings have to be destroyed for one of these magnificent edifices then it is certainly a price worth paying.

DC's china town shrank substantially in the last 20 years. Now there's a sports arena that's used for everything from Hockey games to Nickelback concerts.

Chinese like visiting the UK and Europe cos the architectural heritage remains in many large and small cities and towns....the "new" is seen as inevitably better than "the old"...a hangover of the cultural revolution perhaps and Mao's destruction of the past....also many old buildings are from the hated colonial period hence tainted for that reason another ideological reason to get rid of them....pity that all the replacements are mostly nightmarish....as the average life of a building in China is about 40 years or something many of the current crop will be torn down in the next wave of economic mayhem and the addition to construction and demolition as major movers of an economy needing to be endlessly pumped to the required annual growth rate..

"transform the area into a high-end commercial and business district." If that's the plan renovate the buildings into fancy coffee shops and boutiques. Maybe the coffee shop would serve tea from a samovar and have blond caucasian baristas.

almost all of cities from York north would be dreadful slums There was often nothing wrong with the housing stock in slum areas besides the fact they'd been turned into tenements and neglected. Demolition was often used as it was cheaper than restoration and because prewar architecture was often undervalued especially when compared to the gleaming new schemes meant to replace them. The trouble is we've ended up with situations like swathes of Georgian Newcastle torn down for shopping centres and motorways rather than the plazas and cultural buildings promised.

But the argument put forward by many is that Russia was entered into WW1 as a result of having turned towards the Balkans by way of seeking an alternative outlet for imperial expansion after having been blocked by Japan in the Far East. Had Russia ignored Serbia because of being preoccupied with Manchurian conquests it would hardly have ended up being dragged into a major conflict by the Black Hand Gang and thus the Bolsheviks wouldn't necessarily have come into power at all.

I spent a happy month visiting friends in Dalian about six years ago but looking back now I can barely remember a single street. All I remember is that the city - or at least the parts of it I saw - was utterly charmless. In my memory the entire city was a dull CBD filled with nothing but anonymous office blocks and a few shiny malls. Give me the grimy humid hutongs of Beijing any day.

If they bulldozed the crap out of every hill and valley on that huge chunk of land that is now Shenzhen I doubt they will fret too much about knocking down some dusty old buildings.
