Archaeologists in China have discovered 5000 year-old ancient tombs in China with men measuring over six feet tall inside.

The discovery of the 'unusually tall and strong' people was made in Jiaojia village close to Jinan in eastern China.

这个异乎寻常高大强壮的人被发现于中国东部济南市附近的焦家村。


The men measured from five foot 11 inches to six foot three inches which would have been considered extremely tall 5000 years ago reports the People's Daily Online.

Archaeologists began excavating the ruins of 104 houses 205 graves and 20 sacrificial pits at the village in Shandong province in 2016.

The relics are from a late Neolithic civilisation located near the lower reaches of the Yellow River.

Fang Hui head of Shandong University's school of history and culture said: 'Already agricultural at that time people had diverse and rich food resources and thus their physique changed.'

According to Fang people raised pigs and lived off Millet.

It's thought that the taller men found in the larger tombs were of a high status. Their height is thought to be down to their ability to acquire better food.

Shandong locals are widely considered to be among the tallest in China. This is backed up by official statistics. In 2015 the average height of men aged 18 in Shandong was 5.75 feet compared with a national average of 5.64 feet.
