In China the sharing economy seems to have met its match after a startup that rented umbrellas in 30-minute blocks lost nearly all of its stock in just three months.

The company Sharing E Umbrella required a deposit of £2.20 per umbrella and charged about 6p for every half an hour of use deducted from a minimum top-up of £1. Each GPS-enabled umbrella cost the company about £6.85.

In theory users would scan a code with their smartphone and receive a code to unlock a combination lock built into the handle. There was no penalty for an unreturned brolly a factor that could explain the high incidence of missing umbrellas.

Despite Sharing E Umbrella’s initial setback the company’s founder still plans to roll out 30 million umbrellas across China by the end of the year according to local media.

“We were all baffled by the model of dockless bike sharing; it made users think anything on the street can be shared now” said founder Zhao Shuping according to The Paper a state media website. “But umbrellas and bicycles are not the same: a bike you can park anywhere but an umbrella needs a stand.”

That's just your sad perspective. Think about how much cooperation and sharing it takes for most things to happen every day and despite the commodification of virtually everything.

The rent bikes are everywhere in China now they've completely taken over the streets and the vast majority of users are locals. It's convenient that you don't have to worry about your bike getting stolen and the costs are minuscule. It's also a great way to encourage people to ride bikes rather than using cars or scooters for short rides so it helps bring down emissions. As always with startups many of the companies now competing in this market will probably go belly up but the fundamental idea is absolutely sound.

Why do umbrellas need a stand?

I've always owned an umbrella but wouldn't know where to buy an umbrella stand from.

Is the headline mocking how Chinese people pronounce words... Unfortunately I'm going to have to go with "yes". What percentage of my "one-off contribution" would be supporting that kind of juvenile douchebaggery Graun?

And i think this is why the company plans to roll out 30 million more umbrellas across the country.
Again pretty smart

The only truly successful model for this business is Tinder. Find a partner use it for a while and then get another when boredom sets in with the original going back on the market.

I do agree that the whole rental thing has gone too far but can also see the use of shared umbrellas. You don't necessarily want to carry a brolly with you all day just in case it rains. Sometimes just being able pick one up and use it for a while would be very useful.

The Guardian has an international readership and it's usually impossible to know the nationality of anybody making comments. If anybody outside of the UK is puzzled about the headline 'brolly' is a British slang word for umbrella and there is a common British saying' Jolly bad show' which is sometimes used to describe not playing fair. The headline is meant to be an inoffensive play on words concerning umbrellas going missing.

Tech investors will flush money into any dumb idea. The guys who come up with the ideas don't care if the idea loses money only that they can get as much cash out as possible before the idea fails.

In fact each umbrella cost 9.9 rmb and the company requires a 19.9 rmb deposit which means the company have made a fortune.
Pretty smart move.

Good. Why not just sell umbrellas? This obsession with renting things and dominating the market (and killing off small businesses) need to stop. I hope they lose every penny. This model works with cars because cars are very expensive for the occasional user. For bikes it's pretty much just the tourist market as any regular user will buy one. I'm all for new business but so many of these start up ideas are complete shite.
