China is set to open its first solar motorway that can generate electricity under sunlight.

The high-tech photovoltaic highway comprises the southern part of the Jinan City Expressway in the provincial capital of Shandong and is expected to open by the end of December, reported People's Daily Online.

The highway is built by Qilu Transportation Development Group, a state-owned company in charge of the transport infrastructure of Shandong Province, according to Jiemian News.

This might work under ideal conditions. But highways are a tough environment. Even with 100% electric powered cars, mother nature will continually make it very dirty and degrade the amount of available energy. On top of that, the dynamic forces from vehicular traffic are VERY severe and even high quality concrete construction starts to break down very quickly. Makes for a good green fantasy, though.

Interesting concept. I look forward to hearing how it actually works when it is in use. Particularly intriguing is the use of ?transparent? concrete to protect the fragile solar elements. Some figures on efficiencies of the various components would be helpful. Especially how heat generated is transferred to the road surface to melt the snow.

Having roads double as solar panels seems creative, although judging by the earlier French example, very little electricity is actually produced, for what must be an extraordinary cost.
