If Mark Zuckerberg runs for president, will Facebook help him win?

Despite his protestations to the contrary, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has been acting like someone planning to run for office. He hired a pollster, visited a Detroit auto plant and other swing-state locations, and gave a high-profile commencement speech.

Meanwhile, Facebook has been under intense criticism for its role as a vector of misinformation in recent elections. This week, Facebook admitted that Russian accounts purchased $100,000 in political ads in 2015 and 2016. This disclosure comes only two months after the platform refused to disclose who is paying for advertising on the platform and where they’re running.

This confluence of events demonstrates the urgent need for greater transparency about how Facebook is already being used for electoral influence, particularly its algorithms and advertising features. Facebook must be regulated like the broadcast medium that it has become. And if Zuckerberg wants to run for office, he should be leading the charge for meaningful transparency.
Currently, however, candidates can’t manipulate the algorithm – they only have access to Facebook’s public organizing and advertising tools.

Advertising is another area where Facebook needs to radically increase transparency. While candidates must disclose their spending on required campaign finance filings, they can avoid reporting their exact Facebook spending amounts by hiring a firm to run the ads and paying for them as part of their overall consulting fee.

That would limit the spread of fake news on the platform going forward. And while Facebook claims to have blocked ads from running on fake news sites, they have not yet taken the step to block ads on Facebook by fake news sites – or haven’t disclosed it, if they have.

With two billion global users, Facebook has been adopted faster than any technology or service in human history, and due to its widespread use, people deserve more information regarding its influence in elections. We need to know who is paying to put political content in our newsfeeds, and how the Facebook platform itself determines who sees what.

It’s in the best interests of democratic society to do so. And if this appeal to virtue isn’t convincing enough, Zuckerberg should do so out of self-interest. All of these concerns will reach a fever pitch if Facebook’s CEO runs for office, given the unique ability of the platform to mobilize voters for the boss. Rather than wait for the next crisis, Facebook needs to increase its transparency now.

Laurence Bury
Data mining is overrating as an electoral tool - people vote for what candidates symbolise. Look at Brexit - the reality of the process and its consequences bears no relation to what leaving the EU signifies for its partisan.
In US 2016 people voted against what Mrs Clinton symbolised. If Mr Zuckerberg can then symbolise the future of an appealing Democrat-governed US, then he will win. For the current generation this appears unlike, but who knows in 20 years time?

Indeed, people vote for what candidates symbolize.
But how do those symbols develop and how do folks know what candidates symbolize? A small percentage learn through campaign events, the majority learn through media which informs and shapes public opinion at the same time.
This is especially true in the highly fractured media environment that we face, in the US at least, in the 21st century. With Reagan's repeal of the Fairness Doctrine in 1986, broadcast "news" has become little more than propagandized political infotainment. Then folks turn to social media to see what their "friends" think and to read articles with similar bents that are purposefully fed into their new streams for a fee. Their ingrained biases and assumptions about what candidates symbolize are further and more subtly manipulated by politicos and profiteers.
And were the partisan Brexiteers not supported in their beliefs that the consequences of Brexit would be far rosier than they're turning out to be by politicos using all types of media to convince them that such was the case?
In the US in 2016, the majority of voters voted for what Clinton symbolized not against.

Running for President costs hundreds of millions - if you need financial backing you are in debt to banks who finance you. Ordinary people and basic morality are priced out the market.

I hope Zuckerberg realises Facebook has a lot to answer for - our decreased productivity, increasing vanity and obsession with social media, decreasing the attention span of users wanting instant news.

Important though the influence of social media is, surely it is even more worrying that Zuckerberg might run at all. We're currently witnessing the shambolic effects of what happens when celebrity, hubris and half-baked sloganeering win office. Is Zuckerberg's (potential) run for President a sign of a trend that the very rich and famous now mistake President of the United States as the "best CEO job in the world"?

I have nothing against Zuckerberg. He seems like a nice person. However, Facebook is a powerful media organization that can and has influenced elections. There is clearly a massive conflict of interest and potential for abuse of power here. There should be a law preventing powerful media persons such as Zuckerberg or Rupert Murdoch from contesting elections.

People will complain just as much if the candidates are 'career politicians' as they will if the candidates are billionaire businessmen. Fact is, whether or not the individual themselves has huge piles of cash, any campaign will need ludicrous amounts of money. Even Bernie needed $250 million, just for the primaries.
Maybe we really should just judge them on their policies.

Wake up America! There is a real world out there with real facts. Stop believing the bullshit and use your minds!

Presidency is a long shot. It is made for people who are prepared to lead. While I agree that Mark has got some experience in leading a global company like Facebook, leading a country as large and influential on the world stage as USA requires a different flavor of leadership skills and competence. The mistakes made by Obama in the early stages of his presidency as well as Trump, who presumes that tactics that have worked for his businesses could work in his time in the Oval office 。

To underestimate the power of social media could be a costly mistake - as many politicians learned the hard way. We are being told that for the first time more young people are likely to vote (likely does not mean 'will' of course) - contrary to what politicans want us to believe (that young people don't vote). So it remains to be seen. One thing for sure - there is an appetite for young, liberal, messiah-like progressive figures - Trudeau, Macron and the like. Plus to oust Trump, you need to be pretty OTT. I don't buy this 'when they go low, you go high' rubbish. Populist bullies have to be called out on their bigotry and all tactics are allowed - roll up your sleeves and be prepared to throw some serious punches.

Why are people condemning him already. Its better for democracy if more people run for presidency no. Then you will have more people to chose from.
It is quite clear that the social media has immense influence over the political outcomes. This article is spot on to point out that if he is at all interested in the world of politics, then he does not have to look further than to his own feet-though by no means an easy thing, taking a lead of facebook getting the right balance between freedom of speech, and human rights. But though I understand that advertisement is where they get much of their profit from, there should be a limit on how much, and also there should be strict regulations specifically for ones that try influence political results. If he can manage that, he will be contributing to strengthening democracy itself.

I dont know enough about Zuckerberg to know if he would be suitable as President but he has created a massive global success story in Facebook which shows he has got alot of ability and skill. What is the point of promoting a wealthy guy as a potential president? This is how a system gets rigged. Have money, or raise tons of money, and be a president. No one is saying what ideas he has, what reforms he has in mind, what level of "humanity" is in him. Let MZ himself articulate his ideas, and he better tell us fast if he is thinking to be a president, if that is what he wants. Let's see what he brings to the table. I get tired of all this worship of celebrities and people with money. Please do not make a mockery of your readers.

The data generated on Facebook is enough for him to win. All he needs to do is study it, understand the political sensibilities of the American people and base his campaign on the data. And what he could do with all of the global data and international policy is beyond imagination.
