Can 'smart malls'save China's failing shopping centres from collapse?
In the past year, nearly half of the world’s new shopping malls were built in China – yet manyare now struggling to survive. Can a hi-tech retail revolution bring them backto life?

But how can onlineshopping revitalise physical malls? “Chinese consumers are more open toincorporating mobile technology into their physical shopping,” says JanneHaverinen, of technology group Indoor Atlas. “Most Chinese consumers experienceonline services for the first time through smartphones and mobile apps. Thismake O2O [online to offline] commerce, where technology is used to drivecustomers to physical shops, a trillion dollar opportunity.”

Massivecounterfeiting ("expansion of the money supply") leads to massiveovercapacity and capital misallocation coupled with a rush into speculativeassets...a problem worldwide.
Keynesians,however, will say it's "GDP".

It’s a completelydifferent mindset; there’s no block between the bricks and the clicks. It’s alljust shopping.”Awesome quote! This is the quote of the digital shopping age! And what does this mean in termsof evolving ability and skill of a person to start and maintain a business?Does a shopkeeper need to be a salesman personality or just technologicallysavvy? Then will be be sitekeepers instead of shopkeeprs?

The mall willimmediately recognise you when you arrive, through your phone.
Lolz. It's thestuff of nightmares, isn't it? Prices changing before your eyes, you probablywon't even be able to find an exit before you spend what the computer thinksyou should...

Now if China wouldjust get rid of its obsession with ivory. FFS they alone are going to bringabout the extinction of elephants. I wish there was some serious push from thegovernment to do more. It's sickening tbh.

Maybe they willjust mass breed elephants like cows?

If you care aboutthe extinction of wildlife then you would understand how serious this is. Icould barely get through another recent documentary on the horrors of whatthese animals go through. If you are interested it's on an Al Jazeera programcalled 101 East and the episode is callec "White Gold"Tell your friends.

I haven't seenhard data, but was stunned this year by how you could leave the heat andhumidity & duck into one of umpteen malls in virtually every Chinese cityand wander around, out of the crowds, indeed often entirely alone, in ashopping mall. Encountered many, many shuttered shops and entire sections ofmalls closed off all over the country. Most had next to no staff, virtuallyempty apart from shelves and shelves, cases and cases, of merchandise. All veryglittery, fancy modern lighting, polished marble floors, lovely displays, butno people. Meanwhile, you couldn't move in street markets, fish markets, etc.for the crowds. The malls and shopping plazas looked to me just like thethousands of empty, mostly incomplete, apartment buildings and business blockssprawled out all over the country, someone's losing investment. How this canpersist without total collapse is beyond me.

From what I saw inXi'an this summer, I think most people simply can't afford the prices the shopsat these malls charge. I certainly couldn't afford the shirts that I liked. Toodamn expensive.

This is tremendouslymisleading because it implies that China is in the midst of some national'shopping mall collapse,' which is bullshit.
China is likeanywhere else, I.e Its Big City malls in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kongetc etc are stuffed with consumers, and malls everywhere else are feeling theeffects of the current global recession. In that regard there's no differencewhatsoever between the economy here or the west.
It's irritating tosee this recent spate of erroneous Asia bashing puff pieces in The Guardian. Idon't come to these pages expecting to have to wade through transparentpropaganda and I'm guessing nether do other readers either so please cut itout.

Strange, they"opened the world's largest" shopping mall in Beijing a couple ofyears ago, its surrounded by weeds. Also, for sure malls are quieter lately inChina, especially of foreigners since the racist murder in Sanlitun a few weeksago.

Where in Beijingis this world's biggest mall "surrounded by weeds"?
Xidan is heaving, and so too those in Wangfujing. I love the way you shoehorned the crazed nutrampage that killed a Chinese woman and injured her French boyfriend. If we hadanywhere near murder rate of the US you might have a point, but as you wellknow, we don't.

I think peopleprefer the traditional shops and markets. Prices are lower and you can chat andwander. malls are too antiseptic and cold.
