Holidaymakers may soon be able to experience life under the sea by booking a stay at a futuristic hotel on the ocean floor.

The Planet Ocean Underwater Hotel has received USA Patent and Trademark approval as the world's first underwater hotel - with Egypt, Malaysia, Hawaii and the Bahamas revealed as some of the designers' preferred locations.

With the project receiving patent protection, designers are hoping to build self-contained underwater hotels, which come with a sealed lift, around the world to lure adventurous tourists.

Also Johneng, decompression would only be an issue if it was a closed system, not open to the outside world and this looks like it's open via a large tunnel. You don't suffer decompression after going down a mine in Wales and coming back up.

The design shape could be better, those test tube shaped rooms don't look so good but I guess they are the easiest shape to be. More thought needed but is a good idea for something a bit different. How about a lock that would let you out onto the sea bed for a bit of a swim before turning in for the night or maybies before breakfast...... more thoughts needed, keep it in planning for a few years to tweak a detail or two here and there.
