For weeks “Little Ing” has crisscrossed herhomeland in a bid to become the most powerful woman in the Chinese-speakingworld.

过去几周以来，“小英”在自己的祖国土地上来回奔波以期成为华语世界最有权势的女人。

She has picked her way through screamingcrowds, addressed heaving political rallies and repeatedly punched her fistinto the air while urging voters on with the cry: “Light up Taiwan!”

她穿行于群众的尖叫声中，在政治集会上发表讲话，在向群众呼喊“点亮台湾！”的口号时将拳头打向空中。

But those who know Tsai Ing-wen, the softlyspoken London School of Economics graduate who is on the verge of becomingTaiwan’s first female president, say that for all her hours on the campaigntrail she is far more at home swotting up on policy in the company of her twocats, Think Think and Ah-Tsai.

Those two things are not directly related.The Communists took Beijing some time earlier, and the KMT weren't forced tothrow in the towel until they were on the point of taking Shanghai.

Mandarin Chinese actually called Putonghuaor the common language is the official language of the PRC that's 1.3 billionadding Taiwan and the Chinese diaspora you get another 50 million people soroughly 18 to 20% of the world speak it.

Technically, you don't speak Chinese.Chinese is a written language and there are multiple spoken forms, mostlyMandarin but also Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew, Shanghainese, Hakka, etc etc.
Chinese speaking world - there are 100million ethnic Chinese people outside of China. 20-30 million of them inSoutheast Asia. Another 25 million if you count Taiwan itself, and the rest,scattered over Chinatowns and western countries in the rest of the world.

理论上来说，你不可能说中文。中文是一种书面语言，有不同的口语表达方式，主要是普通话，闽南话，广东话，潮州话，上海话，客家话等等。
华语世界——有1亿华人分布在中国之外。其中2000万到3000万分布在东南亚。另外2500万在台湾，剩下的分布在唐人街和西方国家。

This could be a turning point for SoutheastAsia. Taiwan is a major investor throughout this region, but it has not exertedpolitical leadership to anything like the corresponding extent.
Mainland China is the elephant ineverybody's back yard, and a clearly-independent Taiwan, partially because ofits close US ties, would make everybody here feel more comfortable. The tenASEAN countries, which don't currently include Taiwan, are rapidly growingcloser together economically and socially. Taiwan lies only 200 kilometersnorth of the Philippines (much closer than to its former colonial ruler,Japan), so it is a logical future member of ASEAN.

这对于东南亚来说将是个转折点。台湾是该地区的主要投资者，但是在政治并没有发挥相应的影响力。

Geographically Taiwan is not in SE Asia, soI'm not sure if it is a logical future member. It's an interesting proposal,has it actually been proposed by ASEAN or Taiwan?

SO ... neither is Turkey in Europe....butit is in NATO and applying for EU membership.. Taiwan ethnically can be SEAsian... Strong Malayo Polynesian genetics in majority of Taiwanese. Taiwan canbe anywhere... Northeast Asia or Southeast Asia... That is what makes Taiwanstrategically important!!

土耳其也不是欧洲的啊，但是现在却是北约成员并申请加入欧盟。从种族上看，台湾可以是东南亚国家。。大部分台湾人都具有马来亚波利尼西亚基因。台湾可以是任何地方。。。东北亚或者东南亚。。。这就是台湾具备战略重要性的原因所在。

NATO is not only for European countries;the US and Canada are clearly not in Europe! As for Turkey, it is in factpartly geographically in Europe. None of which has any bearing on Taiwan - andplease understand I'm not saying that Taiwan can't conceivably join ASEAN, I'mjust not sure if it is logical or if it would qualify, hence I asked if it hasactually been proposed by either party. Do you know if it has?

Good move for Taiwan. The clumsy aggressionof China is alienating all of Asia, and after seeing how Hong Kong is beingreeled-back into dictatorship, Taiwanese voters don't want closer ties.

Ever noticed how as soon as you bring arational woman into politics how everything calms down. It’s almost like amotherly effect. It’s odd, I know nothing about her and yet I find myselfimmediately warming to her.
I think the world’s government’s need moreof them, as scientific women are like oil on troubled water.

Tsai's task is simply too daunting comparedwith Merkel's. To achieve DPP's core goal of Taiwan's independence, it's notthe Taiwanese that are too difficult to persuade, but the vast majority of themainlanders who still consider Taiwan as an inseparable island. The latter givetremendous mandate to the CCP to exert whatever means necessary to deter. IfTsai is really visionary, courageous and hopeful as the journalist implies, atleast don't alienate the mainlanders.

比起默克尔，蔡英文所面料的任务更加艰巨。要实现民进党的台湾独立的核心目标，难以说服的不是台湾人，而是绝大部分的大陆人，他们依然认为台湾是不可分割的岛屿。所以大陆人赋予中共巨大权力来采取任何必要手段阻止台湾独立。如果蔡英文真的像媒体所说的那样富有远见，勇敢和满怀希望的话，那么她至少不应该疏远大陆人。
