Staff at the showroom in Zhanjian city, Guangdong Province, southChina, were stunned yesterday when Mr Cai tried to buy his new car with hugeboxes filled with rolled notes, according to Huanqiu.com, an affiliation to People'sDaily.

Mr Cai, as it turned out, is a food wholesaler at the city's Haitianmarket whose business is entirely cash-based - leaving him with thousands incash and not so much in the bank.

Gu Liyuan, manager at the depot, said he was tempted to turn awaythe customer after he refused to pay by card and credit and insisted he couldonly purchase the £8,000 car with 1 RMB (10p) and 10 cent RMB (1p) notes.

He told reporters: 'I've never seen so much money in my life',adding that the depot 'smelt like money' after Mr Cai had dragged in hiscurrency boxes.

Meanwhile Mr Cai admitted that he had a problem in the past withbanks not accepting his cash.

As recently as this week, a desperate laundry businessman appealedfor help after he failed to find a bank to process £32,000 worth of coins hehad accumulated, leaving him unable to pay his staff and his mortgage.

Surely what they are doing turning him away from everywhere is wrong, its legal tender at the end of the day, no?

In the US its illegal to refuse legal tender in any form. What thoserules are in china is anyones guess.

If you tried to pay for a car in cash in the US Jason you'd get avisit from the FBI, if you were pulled over on a traffic stop it would mostlikely be confiscated until you could prove it was legitimate.

Why not just take some in several times a day in amounts the bankswill take especially the coins. Use several family members to spread it aroundthat way you may just get it all into a bank, even use different banks thendraw out paper money and put it into one bank. Problem solved.

A word of advice, don't try that one at home in the US.

"in the US": Currency of the realm = shifty = confiscationwithout hope of restitution regardless of proof to the contrary.

These are old but legal tender bank notes. ¥0.1 dated September 22,1988, ¥1 dated <= April 1, 1997. Probably could be exchanged for newerseries higher denomination notes by China Banknote Printing and MintingCorporation in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi'an, Shijiazhuang, and Nanchang.

They have advanced note counting machinery adapted to sorting largequantities of usable from unusable notes.
